FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kenedy County Sheriff’s Office
On February 6, 2026, members of the Kenedy County Sheriff’s Office gathered to recognize service, dedication, and leadership within the department. Several deputies attended on their day off to pay respect, strengthen camaraderie, and participate in a formal recognition ceremony.
Sheriff Ramon Salinas and County Judge Chuck Burns presented Deputy Ricardo Platas with a Lifesaving Commendation in recognition of his exceptional actions on October 19, 2025.
On that date, Deputy Platas responded to a call for service on U.S. Highway 77 near Tullidos Gate in Kenedy County, Texas. Upon arrival, he encountered a male subject lying in the roadway threatening to end his life with a bladed instrument.
Deputy Platas immediately engaged the subject in calm, deliberate conversation and maintained steady verbal communication while demonstrating compassion and professionalism. Through his persistent de-escalation efforts, the subject — a United States veteran experiencing a mental health crisis — was persuaded to accept medical assistance and was safely transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Deputy Platas’ composure, effective communication skills, and unwavering commitment to preserving life were instrumental in preventing a potential fatality. His actions reflect the highest standards of law enforcement service and bring great credit upon himself and the Kenedy County Sheriff’s Office.
The ceremony also marked a significant transition for Deputy Platas, who has concluded his service with the department after acceptance into the United States Border Patrol Academy. While his departure is bittersweet, the department takes pride in his continued commitment to public service. As County Judge Burns stated during the ceremony, Deputy Platas will always have a home in Kenedy County.
Additionally, Sheriff Salinas administered the oath of office to Reserve Deputy Sheriff Devyn Garza, formally welcoming him to the Kenedy County Sheriff’s Office.
The event concluded with the announcement of well-earned promotions for Captain Adam Rodriguez and Lieutenant Eddie Hinojosa. Both individuals have demonstrated consistent leadership and professionalism, earning the respect and confidence of their peers and subordinates.
The Kenedy County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to serving the citizens of Kenedy County with honor, courage, and integrity.
