Our next book club meeting will be Thursday, April 30 via Zoom - see comments to get on the mailing list. We are reading How to Hide an Empire: A History of the Greater United States by Daniel Immerwahr, which explores the complicated history of US territories and possessions. The New York Times review said: “How to Hide an Empire nimbly combines breadth and sweep with fine-grained attention to detail. The result is a provocative and absorbing history of the United States — “not as it appears in its fantasies, but as it actually is.”

Everyone needs to know this!! There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud!

Last night, the president promoted the SAVE America Act, citing claims of widespread voter fraud that election officials have consistently found to be false.

Confusion and misinformation are forms of voter suppression. Help us spread truth and protect the freedom to vote by sharing this post and taking action.

The Senate could vote on the SAVE America Act this week. Email your Senators today: VoteRiders.org/SAVE

The House is set to vote on the SAVE America Act this week, which is the new and expanded version of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act that passed the House last year. It adds a requirement that individuals present documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) to vote in federal elections, on top of the existing requirements in last year’s SAVE Act that require DPOC in person when registering to vote.

This updated SAVE America Act would add a second occasion upon which voters would have to demonstrate their citizenship to vote: at the polls. That compounds the voter suppression effect of the SAVE Act, because even voters who are properly registered and showed documentary proof of citizenship ahead of the registration deadline could be unable to vote if they show up to the polls on election day without their passport.

Any requirement to present DPOC creates one more barrier to the voting process, as many eligible voters do not have easy access to the necessary documents. Compared to white US citizens, citizens of color are three times more likely to lack documents such as birth certificates, passports, naturalization certificates, or certificates of citizenship, or face difficulties accessing them. For example, while approximately half of all American adults possess a passport, two-thirds of Black Americans do not. The bills would also have a disparate impact on overseas and military voters, people who may have lost documentation due to natural disasters, and married women who’ve changed their names.

The SAVE America Act is scheduled for a House vote this week, and we need your help now to tell your members of the House of Representatives to vote "No"!

Americans do not need MORE obstacles to vote. Tell your Representative to vote no on this legislation.

Update! Author Lindsay Cormack will attend our meeting!

The LWV of Southwest Santa Clara Valley Book Club is reading How to Raise a Citizen (And Why It’s Up to You to Do It) by Lindsey Cormack.

The book speaks directly to an America in which civic knowledge is alarmingly sparse and many people dread politics. It's intended to be a tool for parents, educators, and anyone eager to fill this gap. Cormack offers an engaging and practical approach to discussing political issues and the inner workings of the U.S. government with children. She explains why our schools can no longer be the sites of civic education that they used to be and provides parents with strategies to be able to impart these lessons to their children. From the intricacies of the voting process to the foundational principles of democracy and the significance of key government documents like the Constitution, the author seeks to demystify complex topics with clarity and insight.

LWVSSCV Book Club meetings are online, we'll discuss this book on February 5 at 7 pm. Contact Victoria Zhang at zhlihui .com for more information.
