I finally did a total critter count on all of our new intakes that we are caring for at Wild For Life right now.
16 squirrels (a total of 26 this season)
12 nestling songbirds of various species
8 Merganzer ducklings
1 chipmunk
1 gosling
7 pigeons and doves actively in rehabilitation with 30 pigeons in our total flock
6 beavers (we were up to 11, but have had some successful releases lately!)
1 teeny tiny precious porcupette
1 opossum named Greg
2 woodpeckers
For a total of 55 wild animals currently receiving care.
We are also responsible for the well-being of 31 domestic animals (goat, dog, chicken)
oh, and three disabled geese who just won't leave.
This year we have also had more Wild releases than ever by this time in the year. Many who overwintered with us, like the otters, porcupines, and Erie the beaver. But also some who came in needing a helping hand during early spring, like one very charismatic ring-billed gull with a broken leg who was finally released yesterday, and two adolescent beavers.
It has been a busy season so far, and I have the sneaky feeling that we are just getting started as June tends to be our busiest month. But I wanted to give you the report on the impact that we are having here and that your donations make possible.
Because of how busy we are with the effort it takes to give the best care to so many animals, I apologize that we have taken many of our education programs for the rest of spring and summer off of our schedule.
Now that Bo has achieved the legally required number of education programs to maintain her license, we have to put the animals first and be available here at the rescue. Plus Bo deserves her summer vacation to just enjoy being a beaver at the pond.
I hope everyone will understand that this is a decision we are making to put the animals first, and continue to support us here on our online fundraisers as our education events are a big part of what funds this effort.
One place you can still be guaranteed to meet Bo is in October at the Beaver Ball!
