It's officially Belmont weekend in Saratoga! The final year of Belmont in the Spa City promises to deliver over 120,000 visitors -- and untold millions in economic impact -- for Saratoga and surrounding areas.

But behind the high stakes races, glamor, and celebrity appearances, a coalition of 3,000-plus backstretch workers have been in a protracted fight to earn the right to collectively bargain.

"NYRA has borrowed $450 million from the taxpayers to rebuild Belmont Race Track, and the state collects revenue from the wagering pool. So we and our elected officials all are involved in this enterprise," noted our own Gordon Boyd in a recent letter to the editor in the Daily Gazette. "A global collective bargaining agreement covering all trainers and backstretch employees at New York tracks would be good for racing... getting racing’s business model updated to the 21st century through the dignity of collective bargaining for its essential workers."

Are you heading to the track this weekend? The hard-working stable hands, grooms, hotwalkers, exercise riders, and others seeking dignity in their work will be there, too. 🐎

Ensuring our homeless neighbors across Saratoga County have access to a bed and a warm meal on cold winter months is a must, and we applaud our County Supervisors for their thoughtful deliberation. More discussions are needed to ensure the new Code Blue facility is a success, while addressing the safety and quality of life concerns of the shelter’s neighbors, but this week’s vote was an important first step.

Supervisor Burger highlighted the real financial burden placed on taxpayers by increased police and fire costs, and the need for the County to pay Saratoga Springs a host fee moving forward, while Supervisor Sanghvi emphasized the need for continued conversation about year-round shelter accommodations.

Mayor Safford on the other hand? He can’t be bothered to think about the needs of Saratoga’s unhoused the other half of the year. Pretending a purely seasonal shelter will solve all of the city’s issues is dead wrong, but Safford just doesn’t get it. He’d rather pull hundreds of thousands of dollars away from the only year-round facility in the city and hope for the best. Has he forgotten that less than four years ago the Woodlawn Parking Garage “housed” upwards of 30 to 40 unhoused individuals every night? These people need a place to go, whether Safford wants to acknowledge them or not.

Shelters of Saratoga will pay $1,000 a month to lease land where the wintertime shelter will be built.

TONIGHT: The Saratoga Springs City Council is preparing to advance radical changes to how development occurs, stripping away the ability of our Design Review Board to protect the historic character of our beautiful city. Join us tonight at 7pm at City Hall and tell your Council reps that Saratoga Springs’ architectural heritage is worth saving!

We had our first voter outreach forum last night and it was a BIG success. Toula Ousouljoglou led us in a review of the survey results and then we discussed how the local Democratic party can be more effective going forward. We broke into small groups and there were around 50 people submitting very good ideas and several who are interested in joining our committee!

There is one more voter outreach forum planned for TOMORROW, 2:30 – 4:00 PM, IN THE COMMUNITY ROOM AT THE LIBRARY! Register here https://www.saratogadems.org/yes-i-will-attend-the-in-person-forum/ or simply sign in when you arrive. And bring a friend! These collaborative discussions are a lot easier when you’re at the table with folks you know.
