Getting students outdoors and experiencing different types of weather is important in Waldorf schools for a few key reasons:

1. It connects students to nature and the elements. A core part of Waldorf education philosophy is ensuring students have a close relationship with nature.

2. It gets students out of the typical indoor classroom. Waldorf education aims to educate the whole child - head, heart, and hands. Being outdoors and moving the body engages more senses and aspects of the child.

3. It exposes students to the changing seasons. Tracking the weather and noting seasonal shifts as they experience them promotes deeper awareness of natural cycles and rhythms.

4. It builds resilience and adaptability. Learning to adjust clothing, activities, or mood based on conditions requires flexibility. Facing weather head-on cultivates grit and problem-solving.

5. It reflects life. All types of weather are part of life, and getting outdoors in different elements prepares students for the variety they will encounter in their lives on a regular basis.

So, in line with Waldorf principles, weather of all kinds is considered a worthy and vital part of the educational experience. Students are encouraged to embrace sunshine, puddles, snowballs, and blustery days alike!

Happy Saint Nicholas Day! There are many versions of the story of St. Nicholas, and each one is filled with lessons on generosity and kindness. Here is one version you can read to your familes tonight.

Long ago, in the land we now call Turkey, there lived a young boy named Nicholas. Nicholas's parents died when he was still quite young, leaving him a great deal of money. But Nicholas was not interested in spending his fortune on fancy clothes or selfish pleasures.

Even as a boy, Nicholas loved to help others, especially those less fortunate than himself. In the town where he lived, Nicholas heard about a poor man who had three daughters. The father did not have enough money for the daughters to have proper dowries in order to marry. At night, Nicholas secretly threw bags of gold coins through an open window and into the house to provide dowries for the eldest daughters. When it came time for the third daughter to wed, the poor father stayed awake to thank their mysterious benefactor. That night, Nicholas threw the bag of coins down the chimney, where it landed in a stocking hung up to dry!

As an adult, Nicholas was chosen to become a bishop in the growing religion of Christianity. He was a kind and giving bishop, protecting ships from storms at sea and helping children and the poor whenever he could. After Nicholas died, his generous spirit lived on in the stories people told about him. He became known as a protector of children and a bringer of gifts - a saint in the Christian faith.

The spirit of Saint Nicholas, or Sinterklaas as some called him, spread across the world. His story evolved too, but many things stayed the same - like his secret gift-giving and his care for all children. Every December 6, we honor the real Saint Nicholas and the spirit of loving generosity his story inspires.

Beings of Nature 🌳🍃

There’s a reason Waldorf schools make nature such a central part of the curriculum. Whether it’s frequent outdoor classes or gardening projects, connecting students with the natural world provides immense benefits.

Spending time immersed in nature enhances creativity and imagination in children. The sights, sounds, and textures spark wonder and serve as an ever-changing landscape for play and exploration. This fuels their capacity for innovative thinking.

Interacting with plants and animals also develops empathy and respect at a crucial developmental stage. Caring for living things and observing ecosystems firsthand nurtures compassion. Students form healthy emotional bonds and appreciation for the environment.

And at MSA we're soaking up every last minute of this warm weather before snow covers everything.
