We remember 25 years ago today, America was brutally attacked by Islamist terrorists, killing nearly 3,000 Americans, almost all civilians, in the worst attack on American soil in history. The soaring Twin Towers were struck by hijacked civilian planes and collapsed. The Pentagon was hit by a hijacked plane and another one was taken down in Pennsylvania by heroic Americans onboard.
We remember they were not the last. Heroic firefighters and police charged into the burning towers in Manhattan to save lives on that sunny September morning. More dug through rubble for days, hoping against hope to find survivors. America was devastated and infuriated.
We remember how resilient we were. The American spirit of overcoming rose up. We were united. We struck back and eliminated the terrorists who planned the attacks. We rebuilt in Manhattan with the Freedom Tower. We gathered ourselves up and continued to fight for America.
We will never forget those who were killed that day, the workers in the towers, the firefighters, the police, passersby, tourists, those on the planes, in the Pentagon, along with the thousands that have since died from complications caused by the towers’ collapse.
We remember them and honor them, the victims and heroes. And we remember that the enemies of America still exist.
The lesson remains: Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.
