[Posted 10PM Thu 10/1/2026]:
If you live on the west slopes of the Sacramento Mountains, expect gusty winds of 40 to 50 mph through the night. Meanwhile just over the ridge, expect very light winds, low clouds, and areas of fog. A back door cold front is pushing cooler, moist air up the eastern slopes of the mountains, and descending with gusty and erratic winds on the downslope side.

We've issued a Wind Advisory through 8 AM. The winds are technically just below criteria. 40-50 mph gusts are not uncommon with back door cold fronts in this area. But with all the recent rainfall, the ground is quite soggy, which could result in more downed trees/powerlines, maybe the odd blocked backroad than you'd normally expect from these wind speeds. While we don't expect "Pine-mageddon", the added potential is worth noting.

Also -- when we issue these things, we have to select forecast zones to include. Those zones were mostly designed with typical snow elevation levels in mind, not orographic winds. So, some maps might show places east of Cloudcroft included in the Advisory, or well west of Alamogordo. The real wind risk area will be west of the highest peaks, and down to the Tularosa Basin, but not too far west of US-54.
