Located in downtown Santa Rosa, the History & Genealogy Library serves Sonoma County residents and visiting researchers with reference, archival, and digital collections on county and regional history and culture, as well as resources for family history research. The History & Genealogy Library started in 1967 as the “Sonoma County Room” on the upper floor of the Central Santa Rosa Library. Since

that time, the library has steadily expanded its collections and staff to meet the needs of our growing, changing community.

As we celebrate America's 250th birthday this year, there is another 250th anniversary coming up, commemorating the 1776 arrival of the De Anza expedition in San Francisco. Los Californianos hosts an extravaganza at the Presidio on June 27. (See link in comments.)

One of the most useful tools for those interested in our local history is the Sonoma County Library Historical Photos map hosted by the City of Santa Rosa. You can view a photo location for nearly 35,000 photos taken within Sonoma County by searching the address or historic structure name to see location and photo(s) of the property.

Tips for using the Historical Photo Map Viewer:

How to Search: There is a search window in the top right. You can search for photo keywords, addresses, APNs, intersections and landmarks. Results show up in this left pane. Often less is better when doing a search -- "100 Santa" will find "100 Santa Rosa Ave" etc., but if you type too much you may not get any results.

Aerials: Aerial imagery for various years between 1942 and 2018 are available. To change years, use the slider at the bottom left. Click on the year indicator and drag it, or click on the gray bar at the year you want. Note -- 1942 Aerial only covers part of the County.
