Storm drains connect Streets to Creeks. When we think of storm drains we think of rainwater.

But what about wind? Most people don't realize that potential pollutants can also get into our creeks and storm drains by wind.

The good news is there’s a lot we can do, with some simple changes, that will have great impact. StreetsToCreeks.org/south-sonoma-county/

🌳 Did you know that trees over your roof and wooden fences could pose a fire risk?

🔥 Protect your home by keeping branches clear and considering safer fence materials. Safety first in wildfire zones!

Two of the most common issues we’re seeing right now are above your home—and attached to it.

1. Trees over your roof
Overhanging branches can drop embers and create direct ignition risks.

2. Fences connected to your home
Wood fences can carry fire straight to your structure.

What to do:

• Trim back branches so nothing is hanging over your roof
• Maintain vertical clearance to reduce ember buildup and ignition risk
• Replace the first 5 feet of wood fencing where it connects to your home
• Use non-combustible materials to break the fire pathway
• Inspect regularly: these are now major focus areas in insurance inspections

These aren’t theoretical risks—we’re seeing them come up again and again.

Add these to your priority list.

The biggest vulnerability we see—over and over again—is within the first 5 feet of the home.

Zone 0.

This is where small things become big problems.

A single plant, piece of mulch, or stored item—if ignited by embers—can generate enough heat and flame to ignite siding, windows, or vents.

Focus here first:

• Remove all combustibles within 5 feet of your home
• Eliminate plants and flammable materials near walls and windows
• Clear around vents and siding where heat can build
• Check for small risks: it only takes one item to start ignition

This is the area where we’re seeing the most issues in assessments—and the easiest place to make the biggest impact.

Start with Zone 0.
