Protected creek corridors in your regional parks provide food, shelter and travel routes for a surprising variety of wildlife.

Here you can see beavers, North American river otters, raccoons, great blue herons, mallard ducks, wild turkeys, scrub jays, ground squirrels, black-tailed deer, red-shouldered hawks and more all rely on the same habitat in this Sonoma Valley regional park.

An easy way you can help protect these animals is to keep creeks and trails clean. Trash left behind contaminates waterways and can harm wildlife and the habitats they depend on. Discarded fishing lines and hooks can entangle birds and harm other aquatic wildlife.

If you pack it in, pack it out, and maybe even pick up an extra piece of litter while you’re there. Small actions can make a big difference for your creeks, rivers, lakes and the wildlife that call them home.

[This video shows trail camera footage of a variety of wildlife using the same creek habitat during the day and at night. Animals move through vegetation, drink, forage, swim and walk along the water’s edge.]

Today, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to introduce an ordinance that would place the Parks for All – Measure M sales tax renewal on the Nov. 3 ballot.

If approved by voters, the measure would continue the existing one-eighth-cent sales tax approved by Sonoma County voters in 2018. The proposal would not increase the current tax rate or create an additional tax.
Parks for All funding supports park maintenance and improvements, expand trails, renovate recreation facilities, reduce wildfire risks and improve access to the outdoors. Two-thirds of the revenue supports Sonoma County Regional Parks, while one-third is distributed among the county’s nine cities based on population.

Parks for All funding has supported recent renovations of Maxwell Farms and Larson parks in Sonoma Valley, trail construction at Taylor Mountain in Santa Rosa and Helen Putnam in Petaluma and the opening and expansion of Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Preserve.

The Board is expected to consider adoption of the ordinance this summer. Read the press release at SoCoParks.org/SalesTax
