Ticks are often found in wooded, brushy, or grassy areas and are most active in spring and summer, though tick-borne illnesses can occur year-round in Florida. Because they feed on the blood of animals and people, ticks can spread diseases through their bites, including Lyme disease. For more info, visit our website.

🦟FUN FACT FRIDAY🦟

Male mosquitoes never bite humans and feed exclusively on plant nectar and fruit juices throughout their entire lifespan. Only female mosquitoes bite because they require the proteins in blood specifically for egg development rather than for nutrition. A female mosquito that cannot find blood can still survive on plant sugars but cannot produce viable eggs. During a blood meal she injects anticoagulant saliva that prevents clotting while she feeds, and it is this saliva injection that triggers the immune response producing the itching welt. Without the saliva injection the bite itself would cause no reaction. Females can detect carbon dioxide from human breath from up to 50 meters away and use heat, moisture, and specific body odor compounds to locate exposed skin. The mosquito responsible for more human deaths than any other animal on Earth, through malaria, dengue, and other diseases, weighs less than two milligrams and lives for only approximately 2 weeks as an adult.
