Earlier this month, our own Rachel Tate, VP of Ombudsman Services, and Miles McNeeley, VP, Elder Abuse Prevention were panelists at Bet Tzedek - The House of Justice’s 10th Annual Event, “From Hidden Harm to Community Action,” where 200 professionals gathered to learn more about post-disaster recovery challenges, missed behavioral health needs and trusted caregiver-to-elder mistreatment. The event marked a decade of leaders coming together to connect on ways to strengthen our community's collective response to prevent and combat elder abuse. It was a pleasure seeing Dr. Anthony Hou, WISE Board Director and Chief, Dept. of Geriatrics & Palliative Medicine, Kaiser Permanente & Physician Director, SCPMG Elder Abuse Program.

When Christine O. saw a local advertisement in 2019 promoting affordable day trips for seniors at WISE, she joined our senior center, The Club, right away - and soon became a frequent "day-tripper," forming friendships and finding a welcoming community. But when her condo burned down in the Palisades fires, her membership at The Club became even more of a refuge. She began taking classes, joined WISE's Fire Relief Support Group and through our Care Management, received help securing basic necessities as she began putting her life back together. Now, on the road to recovery, she is also giving back by volunteering and by making a monthly gift to WISE. To that end, we've just launched the WISE Circle, our new monthly giving community, and we'd ask you to consider joining it. Your recurring support will help WISE plan ahead, respond quickly, and ensure that older adults have access to the care and support they need.

"You must never, ever give up. You must never, ever give in. You must never, ever give out. We must keep the faith because we are one people. We are brothers and sisters. We all live in the same house: The American house." — John Lewis, late civil rights leader and U.S. Representative.

Today, June 19 is Juneteenth—Freedom Day. WISE wishes all in our community a meaningful observance of this important day, and a beautiful Father's Day weekend ahead. We'll see you on Monday.
