Yesterday, on Indigenous Peoples' Day, we were honoured to welcome members of the Whakatōhea iwi (tribal) delegation, representatives of the Gabrieleno Tongva community, friends of the Fowler Museum, and guests from across Los Angeles to the New Zealand Official Residence.

Following the opening of Uhengaparaoa, Taonga Tuku Iho: Ancestral Gifts and Contemporary Māori Art at the Fowler Museum, the evening provided an opportunity to celebrate Māori art, culture, and storytelling, while strengthening the connections between Aotearoa New Zealand and the United States.

Ngā mihi nui to the Whakatōhea delegation, our partners, and everyone who joined us for this special occasion.

Uhengaparaoa, Taonga Tuku Iho: Ancestral Gifts and Contemporary Māori Art is on exhibit until May 2027. The exhibit connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka(fine flax cloak) housed in the Fowler Museum at UCLA

Last month, the New Zealand Consulate-General in Los Angeles joined colleagues across the New Zealand Government network for a two-day emergency preparedness workshop led by crisis response expert Mark Bateman.

The exercise strengthened our crisis response capabilities, tested contingency plans, and reinforced the importance of coordination and readiness when supporting New Zealanders overseas. Ngā mihi to Mark for sharing his expertise and helping ensure our team is ready to assist New Zealanders when it matters most.

From Aotearoa New Zealand to California, Kihikihi Wawā (Circadias) is bringing a distinctly New Zealand story to new audiences at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara’s exhibition Falling into the Future: Kinetic Art at the Edge of the World. The interactive installation draws inspiration from the cicada, weaving together sound, technology, and cultural connection in a uniquely Kiwi way.

Reflecting on the installation's California debut, artist Anne Niemetz noted: "Kihikihi Wawā is a project born in Aotearoa, New Zealand... Bringing it to California and seeing how an entirely new audience responds to something so closely associated with home has been incredibly rewarding."

Congratulations to Anne Niemetz and Newton Chan on this remarkable installation!

See it for yourself, opening Saturday 4 October until May 1 2027.
