Reflecting on last month's National Mental Health Awareness Month, Santa Maria High School (SMHS) continues to celebrate the positive energy from its annual Mental Health Week, which took place from May 18–22.

Organized through a collaborative effort by the SMHS Wellness Center staff, School Counselors, ESS therapists, School Psychologists, Community Schools Counselor, and ASB, this week-long campus initiative focused on destigmatizing mental health and equipping students with practical, lifelong tools for their personal well-being.

The Wellness Resource Fair, hosted on Tuesday, May 19th, brought together students, teachers, administrators, and dedicated support staff, along with numerous external community wellness agencies, to explore seven essential pillars of wellness: mental, physical, nutritional, health & hygiene, financial, spiritual, and social/emotional well-being. Lunchtime on campus came alive with interactive educational booths, therapy dogs, guitars, school clubs, and creative art projects.

Agencies and programs that kindly gave their time to support and invest in SMHS students included:

“We wrapped up the week by celebrating our shared journey in a special three-minute recap video posted on Instagram (). To our incredible SMHS staff and community partners: you give so much to others, so please remember to pour back into yourself. The Wellness Center encourages you to pause, breathe, and prioritize your own well-being.” — SMHS Wellness Counselor Margarita Guillen-Franco.

“I enjoyed the spin the wheel activities and participating in the games. I also enjoyed talking to students, counselors, teachers, staff, and other types of adults on campus that I felt comfortable with. I like to box and it helps me with stress, and I also manage stress by talking with trusting adults. No matter what you’re going through, there are adults and students who can help.” — Marco Zaragoza, SMHS Student.

“It was great seeing our students connect with the different organizations and explore resources available to them. We are grateful to our community partners and SMHS staff for helping create this event that reminded students they are supported, valued, and never alone in their wellness journey.” — Alondra Zarate-Zavala, SMHS Wellness Coach.

Students, families, and educational partners gathered on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Allan Hancock College to celebrate the launch of the Early College Warriors program, a partnership designed to expand college access and accelerate student achievement.

Thirty-nine current junior high students completed a competitive application and interview process and have been selected as the inaugural cohort of Early College Warriors at Righetti High School for the upcoming school year.

“The Early College Warriors program will provide high school students the opportunity to complete their Cal-GETC (California General Education Transfer Curriculum) requirements while they complete their high school classes. By the time these students graduate high school, they will be well-prepared to attend a California public university, having already completed their general education requirements, saving them both time and costs,” said Victoria Lopez, High School Liaison.

The orientation event welcomed incoming students and their families to the Allan Hancock College campus, offering an introduction to the program and the college experience. Students participated in a campus tour and received their Allan Hancock student IDs.

“I am excited to challenge myself academically and get a head start on my future education. Taking these college-level courses will help build my study habits. I want to explore different subject areas related to my career goal of becoming a clinical psychologist,” said Catalaya Morales, an eighth-grade student from Lakeview Junior High.

Another student, Nathaniel Avila, an eighth-grade student from Guadalupe Junior High, emphasized the program’s impact on long-term goals and family aspirations. “I want to head to the university right away. I do not want to waste time. I want to make my parents proud, and I will be the first in my family to attend a university. I want to have a good career and help my parents with my special needs younger sister,” Avila said.

The Early College Warriors program reflects a shared commitment to college and career readiness and serves as a model for removing barriers and expanding opportunities for all students.

Righetti High School’s Amaya Uvalle has officially committed to continue both academic and athletic pursuits at California Polytechnic University, Humboldt, where she will compete in NCAA Division II Cross Country and Track and Field.

The Warrior signed her letter of intent inside the Warrior cafeteria during a celebration on Tuesday.

A highly accomplished and decorated athlete at Righetti High School, Amaya concludes an outstanding career holding multiple school records, including the 5000m, 3 mile, 4000m, 2 mile, 1600m, 1 mile, 4x800m relay, and 4x400m relay. Amaya also set records on several cross-country courses and ranks among the top 10 all-time at Righetti in the 400m, 800m, and 3200m.

Amaya earned numerous accolades throughout a four-year varsity career, including two-time First Team All-League and two-time Second Team All-League honors in cross country, as well as four-time Second Team All-League recognition in track and field. Amaya qualified for CIF competition in both sports each year.

In 2024, Amaya played a key role in leading the Righetti Girls Cross Country team to a historic Ocean League title, marking the program’s first league championship for either gender since 1999. Amaya also led the track and field team as the top scorer for four consecutive years, contributing to three Santa Barbara County Championship titles.

During her time at Righetti, she has become heavily involved with the athletic training program and participated in an internship with the school’s Athletic Trainer and Sport’s Medicine Teacher David Terrones.

In addition to athletic success, Amaya was named Righetti High School Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

“Amaya’s impact on Righetti Cross Country and Track and Field has been tremendous, and the records set will stand for a very long time,” said Warrior Coach Megan Cota- Harrison. “Amaya is arguably the greatest female distance athlete to come out of Righetti since Karol Karamitsos and Julie Deal in the early 1980s.”

Amaya received offers from multiple universities, including NCAA Division I UC Riverside, but ultimately chose Cal Poly Humboldt for its alignment with long-term academic and career goals, as well as the opportunity to continue competing in both sports.

Amaya plans to major in Kinesiology and pursue a career as a sport’s physical therapist, with a goal of working directly with collegiate athletes.

“While committed to competing for as long as possible, Amaya is also focused on building a strong professional future beyond athletics,’’ Cota-Harrison added.

Student artists at Santa Maria High School (SMHS) have officially left their permanent mark on campus.

In an extraordinary hands-on collaboration, 28 students from the SMHS Art 2 class have completed a massive, large-scale mural inside the SMHS Stadium. The vibrant installation was designed and painted alongside internationally recognized abstract installation artist Allison Kunath and her creative team.

Spanning 60 feet by 9 feet (approximately 540 square feet), the mural serves as a visual bridge between the campus, local alumni, and the broader Santa Maria community. The artwork intricately incorporates both sports icons and academic symbols, intentionally representing the diverse array of sports, hobbies, and academic paths pursued by the student body. Anchoring the entire piece is the school's beloved, unifying motto: "Once a Saint, Always a Saint."

A High-Tech, Collaborative Creative Process

The project kicked off a few weeks ago when Art 2 students began conceptualizing and designing individual icons to represent their school experience. Kunath then digitized these student designs, seamlessly weaving them together with core SMHS elements, including the text and the school's mascot, Sammy the Saint.

The physical transformation of the stadium wall took place over an intensive, multi-day energetic push:
• Wednesday Morning: Kunath and her team arrived early to prime the massive wall. Using cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) headsets, they mapped out and drew the sweeping outlines of the background.
• Mid-Week Production: SMHS students stepped up with paint rollers to fill in the large, bold sections of the background.
• Precision Icon Placement: The artistic team utilized stencils, chalk, and a traditional pounce pattern to precisely transfer the students' custom sports and academic icons onto the wall.

• The Final Touches: Every student in the Art 2 class grabbed small detail brushes to hand-paint the intricate icons, before the final lettering and Sammy the Saint were added to complete the masterpiece.

To celebrate their hard work and collective achievement, the student painters were treated to a well-earned pizza and donut party on Friday afternoon as the final brushstrokes dried.

Voices from the Canvas

For the graduating seniors involved, the project provided a rare opportunity to work on a commercial-grade public art installation before heading into the world, according to Saint Visual Arts Teacher Chelsea Greene.

"I enjoyed the design process and working with my classmates," said Bianca Jimenez, a 12th-grade student who participated in the project. "I designed the pom-pom because some people forget that cheer is also part of sports, and I liked how it was a collaboration between us all. I learned a lot from Allison."

SMJUHSD's senior Clap Out even took place last Friday when 50 seniors from SMHS, ERHS, and PVHS walked the halls of their former junior high schools, greeted by cheers, applause, and excitement from current junior high students.

The event provided younger students with a powerful glimpse into their future, as they saw firsthand the accomplishments that await them as they prepare to enter high school.

The Senior Clap Out is designed to motivate and inspire students by connecting them with graduates who once stood in their shoes. By revisiting their former campuses, seniors reflect on how far they have come, while also encouraging younger students to stay focused on their academic journeys. A big thank you to the college and career center staff for supporting the coordination of this event.

"Our students don't always get to see how valuable their experiences are for younger generations. This event allows our seniors to inspire younger generations, and, at the same time, it gives our incoming students hope for their own future."- Victoria Lopez, High School Liaison.

"Going to my old schools gave me nostalgia and it was great seeing younger kids striving for the current position that we're in and hopefully giving them inspiration to continue their studies. It was also great seeing past teachers and staff demonstrating how far we've came due to their incredible support." - Genaro Garcia Cruz, Santa Maria High School 12th grade.

"It was a wonderful experience reminiscing the old times. I graduated from Tommie Kunst Junior High School, and I got to see my former teachers and my little sister. It was nice showing the younger generations that if you work hard, you can pursue your dreams and soon enough return to the junior high school hallways like I did." - Oscar Ramirez Garcia, Pioneer Valley High School, 12th grade.

After graduation Oscar will be enlisting in the United States Marines in hopes of becoming an electronic maintenance technician.
