Two weeks ago I traveled to Chicago for the 2026 National Conference of State Legislatures Legislative Summit. I enjoyed spending time connecting with state legislators from across the country, deepening relationships with colleagues here in New Mexico, and learning more about approaches to issues from housing policy and AI to prison conditions and impacts at the state level from recent Supreme Court decisions.

The highlight of the trip was presenting the bipartisan Child Care Policy Working Group's report providing guidance for building economically viable childcare systems across the country. It was an honor to sit on a panel alongside legislators from Maryland, North Carolina, and South Dakota and share our ideas. I hope that the experience we have gained working to help establish and grow the Early Childhood Education & Care Department here in New Mexico can continue to be an inspiration for other states.

I look forward to seeing everyone again in Atlanta, GA next August!

State Sen. Linda Trujillo (D-Santa Fe) told a room of conference attendees Monday that work to create the universal program had been underway for years, although many people in and out of New Mexico hadn’t heard of it until late last year.

“New Mexico didn’t just wake up one morning and say, ‘Hey, we’re going to provide universal childcare,’” she said.

In 2019, while a member of the state House of Representatives, Trujillo carried a bill to create the New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department, which now oversees universal childcare. The next year, state leaders founded the Early Childhood Trust Fund with an investment of more than $300 million. The fund’s balance, which pays for universal childcare in large part, surpassed $11 billion earlier this year.

A New Mexico lawmaker was among a national bipartisan coalition that presented the results of a yearlong childcare report Monday.

Today I was proud to attend the soak and rollback for new Fire Truck #3, a project I was honored to help fund through capital outlay. It was great to celebrate alongside our firefighters, their families, and our community as we welcomed this much-needed new equipment into service. Thank you to the Santa Fe Fire Department for your dedication and for everything you do to keep our community safe.

I spent April 20th at the New Mexico Water Leaders Workshop in Ruidoso, NM, connecting with leaders and learning more about the future of water in the Southwest. The field trip to Heart of the Desert and the National Desalination Plant in Alamogordo offered a valuable look at how agriculture and innovative water technology are helping shape resilient solutions. It also reinforced the importance of monitoring well levels and tracking salinity discharge to protect long-term water supplies and maintain healthy groundwater systems. Careful monitoring helps identify trends early, supports better management decisions, and ensures that water resources remain sustainable for communities, agriculture, and industry.

What an honor to join NM Supreme Court Chief Justice David Thompson, AOC Deputy Director Sarah Jacob's, and 1st Judicial District Court Chief Judge Hon. Bryan Biedscheid at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Santa Fe Magistrate Court facility. This important project has been in the works for over a decade and will provide the court with adequate space and up-to-date facilities. I am deeply proud to have worked hard in the past year to ensure that capital outlay allocated by my predecessor Sen. Nancy Rodriguez would be re-authorized. It is an honor to carry on her legacy within the district and do all that I can to support the courts and the role they play in our communities.

It was an incredible honor to attend today’s signing of SB 241, landmark legislation establishing universal childcare in New Mexico. As a sponsor of this bill, I am deeply proud of the collaborative work that brought it to life — from advocates and educators to parents and community leaders.

This moment represents years of effort and a shared commitment to our children, our families, and the future of New Mexico’s workforce. Together, we’re investing in stronger communities and greater opportunity for every child.
