New Mexico Department of Veterans' Services

New Mexico Department of Veterans' Services DVS is the state cabinet-level agency that serves New Mexico's veterans and their families.

The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services

New Mexico has a long and proud military legacy dating back before it became the nation’s 47th state on January 6, 1912. From its early “citizen soldiers” who trekked up the El Camino Real, through the formation of the “New Mexico Territory”...through the Battle of Glorieta during the Civil War...playing a major role in Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Rider

s... on through World War I…World War II’s Navajo Code Talkers and the brave men of the 200th and 515th Coastal Artillery Unit who endured the infamous Bataan Death March…through the wars in Korea, Vietnam, and the current Middle East crisis--New Mexicans have always served with honor and distinction at one of the highest rates of service of any state in our nation. In 2003, after finally recognizing this long history of service by its citizens, the New Mexico State Legislature passed the Veterans Service Department Act to elevate the venerable New Mexico Veterans Commission to a cabinet-level agency—the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services—providing our state’s veterans a cabinet-level voice within the executive branch of state government. The agency is led by the Cabinet Secretary, who is appointed by and reports directly to the Governor.

Today, the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (NMDVS) celebrates the 251st Birthday of the United States Army and honors the generations of Soldiers who have answered the call to serve since June 14, 1775.

For 251 years, the Army has played a vital role in defending our nation, preserving freedom, supporting allies, responding to disasters, and providing humanitarian assistance around the world. Through every era of American history, men and women who serve have demonstrated courage, resilience, and a commitment to service that continues to define the Army today.

New Mexico shares a strong connection to that legacy. From generations of Army Veterans who served in every major conflict to today's active-duty Soldiers, National Guard and Reserve Members, and Army Reserve members, military service remains woven into the fabric of our state. Their leadership, sacrifice, and dedication continue to strengthen communities across New Mexico and beyond.

On this Army Birthday, NMDVS proudly recognizes all soldiers past and present, as well as the military families who support them. Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your continued commitment to our nation.

Happy 251st Birthday, U.S. Army. “This We'll Defend!”

Today, the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (NMDVS) joins Americans across the nation in observing Flag Day and honoring one of our country's most enduring symbols.

On June 14, 1777, nearly a year after declaring independence from Great Britain, the Continental Congress adopted the first official flag of the United States. The resolution declared: "That the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."

That simple declaration gave our young nation a unifying symbol during a time of uncertainty and struggle. As the United States grew, so did the flag. New stars were added to represent each state admitted to the Union, eventually reaching the 50 stars we recognize today following Hawaii's admission as the nation's 50th state in 1959.

For many years, communities across the country informally observed June 14 as a day to celebrate the American flag. Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Calvin Coolidge issued proclamations encouraging the observance of Flag Day, but it was not until 1949 that Congress officially designated June 14 as National Flag Day. President Harry S. Truman signed the legislation into law, establishing the annual observance that continues today.

For veterans, the American flag carries a special meaning. It represents the nation they swore to defend, the service members who stood beside them, and the sacrifices made in defense of freedom. It has flown over battlefields, military installations, ships, memorials, and communities across generations of American history. It serves as a reminder of those who returned home and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Today, NMDVS encourages all New Mexicans to display our flag with pride and take a moment to reflect on the freedoms it represents.

The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (NMDVS) was proud to participate in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of New Mexico Annual Conference on Friday, June 12, at the Embassy Suites in Albuquerque.

NMDVS Cabinet Secretary Jamison Herrera provided attendees with updates on agency programs and services, highlighted the recent opening of the Taos State Veterans Cemetery, delivered a benefits briefing, and discussed the importance of legacy planning for veterans and their families.

In recognition of Women Veterans Day, Secretary Herrera read Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s Women Veterans Day proclamation and presented NMDVS challenge coins to the eldest and youngest women veterans in attendance to honor their service.

NMDVS staff were also on-site, assisting veterans with state benefits, issuing New Mexico State Parks Lifetime Veteran Passes and property tax exemption certificates, and answering questions about programs and services available to veterans and their families.

Thank you to the VFW of New Mexico for the opportunity to connect with veterans from across the state and share information about the benefits and services they have earned through their service.

The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (NMDVS) celebrated Women Veterans Day today at Sky Room Campus Park in Rio Rancho, bringing together women veterans, their families, and community supporters to recognize the service, sacrifices, and achievements of women who have served our nation.

The celebration opened with the presentation of the colors by the Women Veteran Warriors Color Guard. NMDVS Field Services Director Robin Wilson led attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance and salute to the New Mexico flag, followed by a Land Acknowledgment from NMDVS Tribal Liaison Beverly Charley. Reverend Karen Street of American Legion Post 95 delivered the invocation and benediction.

Following opening remarks by NMDVS Cabinet Secretary Jamison Herrera, Women Veterans Program Manager Amberly Viner read Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s Women Veterans Day proclamation and spoke about the importance of honoring the generations of women who have answered the call to serve.

“Every woman veteran has a unique story, but we are united by a shared commitment to service and a willingness to put something greater than ourselves first,” said Viner. “Today, we celebrate the courage, sacrifice, and contributions of women veterans across New Mexico and our nation.”

A highlight of the celebration was the cake-cutting ceremony. Army veterans Mary Bell, the oldest woman veteran in attendance, and Lasondra Menchengo, the youngest, joined Amberly Viner in cutting the ceremonial cake, symbolizing the generations of women who have served our nation. Secretary Herrera then presented both veterans with NMDVS challenge coins in recognition of their service.

Women Veterans Day commemorates the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, which granted women the right to serve as permanent members of the U.S. military and helped pave the way for generations of women who continue to serve with honor and distinction.

NMDVS would like to thank the City of Rio Rancho for the use of the venue and extend our appreciation to Women Veterans of New Mexico, the New Mexico Veterans Integration Centers, and Rio Rancho Senior Affairs for their participation in today's celebration.
NMDVS proudly recognizes the contributions, leadership, and legacy of women veterans across New Mexico. Thank you for your service to our state and nation.

Today, June 12, we celebrate Women Veterans Day and honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of the women who have worn our nation's uniform.

This day commemorates the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, which granted women the right to serve as permanent members of the U.S. military and helped pave the way for generations of women in the armed forces.

Women Veterans have served with strength and resilience throughout every era of military history. From combat zones and leadership roles to medical support and humanitarian missions, they have answered the call to serve with dedication and honor. Their impact continues long after military service through their leadership in families, workplaces, and communities.

The New Mexico Department of Veterans' Services proudly recognizes the nearly 17,000 women Veterans who call New Mexico home. Your service matters. Your sacrifice is seen. Your contributions continue to strengthen our state and nation.

Today, and every day, we salute New Mexico's Women Veterans. Thank you for your service.
