With hurricane season approaching, now is the time to begin preparing for emergencies. Residents who may need additional assistance during a natural disaster are encouraged to register with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR).

The STEAR program is a free registry that helps local emergency planners and first responders identify individuals who may need extra assistance during an emergency, including seniors, individuals with disabilities, those with medical needs, or residents who may require transportation or personal assistance.

Residents can register by:
- Calling 2-1-1 or (877) 541-7905
- Visiting stear.tdem.texas.gov

In the event of a natural disaster, the City of Santa Fe may use this registry to help conduct welfare checks and assist residents as resources are available. If contact attempts by phone or messaging are unsuccessful, emergency personnel may conduct in-person welfare checks when necessary.

Please note:
- Registration must be renewed each year to keep information current.
- Registering with STEAR does not guarantee specific services during an emergency.

Please share this information with anyone who may benefit from this program.

Texas Flood Awareness Week concludes with Friday’s theme: “Stay Aware – Communication & Alerts”

Staying informed before and during severe weather can make all the difference during a flood emergency. Residents are encouraged to monitor trusted weather sources, enable emergency alerts on mobile devices, and sign up for local notifications when available.

The City of Santa Fe also offers an emergency alert system that residents can sign up for through the City’s website to receive important updates and notifications during severe weather and emergency situations.

Receiving timely warnings and updates can help you make safe decisions, avoid dangerous areas, and stay prepared when conditions change quickly.

Texas Flood Awareness Week continues with Thursday’s theme: “Erosion & Water Velocity.”

Fast-moving floodwaters can be extremely powerful and dangerous. Strong water velocity can wash away roads, damage property, move debris, and create hazardous conditions in a matter of seconds. Flooding can also cause erosion, which weakens land surfaces, drainage areas, and infrastructure over time.

Even shallow moving water can be stronger than it appears, which is why it is important to stay alert and avoid flooded areas during severe weather events.

Wear Blue Wednesday & Floods After Wildfires

Today, Texans are encouraged to wear blue to help raise awareness about flood safety and preparedness across our communities.

Did you know that areas affected by wildfires can face an increased risk of flooding? Burned vegetation and damaged soil make it more difficult for the ground to absorb rainfall, which can lead to faster-moving runoff, flash flooding, and debris flow during heavy storms.

Staying informed and prepared can help protect lives and property before severe weather occurs.

Texas Flood Awareness Week continues with today’s theme “Droughts & Debris.”

While drought conditions may seem unrelated to flooding, dry and hardened ground can actually increase the risk of flash flooding because water is unable to absorb into the soil as quickly. Storm debris can also clog drainage systems, ditches, and roadways, causing water to rise faster during heavy rainfall.

Residents are encouraged to help keep storm drains and drainage areas clear of debris and stay aware of changing weather conditions throughout the year.

05/19/2026

May 18th, 2026, through May 22nd, 2026, is Texas Flood Awareness Week, a statewide reminder to stay informed and prepared before severe weather occurs. Flooding can happen quickly and with little warning, making preparation and awareness especially important for keeping yourself, your family, and your property safe.

Today’s theme is “Know Before You Go,” encouraging residents to check weather conditions, road closures, and flood risks before traveling. Remember, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” and never drive through flooded roadways.
