NMDOT District Two’s Corona Patrol were out along NM 247 cleaning cattle guards recently.

Routine maintenance ensures cattle guards continue to work as intended, keeping cattle off the main roads.

They also improve drainage (but as you can see, they can also capture runoff materials) and protect both the roadway and surrounding infrastructure.

On public roads in New Mexico cattle guard maintenance is a shared responsibility between state, county, and tribal authorities.

Springer Municipal Airport (S42) is making big strides in infrastructure and safety upgrades.

The airport recently completed a $350,000 design build project to replace its aging electrical vault, ensuring reliable power for airfield lighting and improving overall operational safety.

At the same time, a $200,000 preliminary engineering report is underway to assess pavement conditions on Runway 1/19 and guide future rehabilitation efforts—supporting long term functionality and regulatory compliance.

As a vital lifeline for patients needing emergency medical air transport to major hospitals, these improvements help ensure the airport can continue serving the community safely and reliably.

The Santa Domingo Bridge Replacement project recently reached a critical phase when the new bridge deck was ready for concrete to be poured.

Since Indian Service Road 88 passes underneath the bridge, it needed to be closed during the operation.

Crews did this work at night to minimize disruption to motorists.
