FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver Responds to Commissioners’ Removal from Bipartisan United States Election Assistance Commission

Yesterday, the President Trump unceremoniously dismissed all members of the bipartisan United States Election Assistance Commission, an organization charged with helping election officials improve election administration and helping Americans participate in the voting process.

“This is effectively a complete dismantling of an independent, bipartisan commission that exists for the sole purposes of supporting secure elections and an informed electorate,” said Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver. “It is reckless, unwarranted, and threatens to do real harm to the confidence Americans have in our elections. No matter how much chaos this administration continues to try to create, I know that my colleagues and I remain resolved in our commitment to ensuring every eligible voter has an opportunity to safely and securely cast a ballot in November. New Mexicans should continue to rely on information available on our website for voter registration requirements and as they make plans to vote.”

The Election Assistance Commission was established by the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) in 2002 and is comprised of four commissioners that are recommended by major and minor party leadership in the House of Representatives, nominated by the president of the United States, and approved by the Senate. No more than two commissioners may belong to the same political party. Among its responsibilities are adopting voting system guidelines, providing official guidance on HAVA compliance and accrediting national testing facilities for voting system equipment.

The office’s online business service portal is consistently maintained and updated so that it continues to meet industry best practice standards for security and utility. The portal features data encryption, unique user roles and passwords – in addition to features required for state and federal compliance.

Beginning in July 2026, existing users of the New Mexico Business Portal will also be prompted to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) when logging into the system. It only takes a moment, helps to keep your account secure, and helps the state prevent fraud.

Multi-factor authentication confirms your identity when logging into the online business portal, and it is a crucial way in which the system protects you and your business by reducing the risk of someone gaining access to your account without permission.

The MFA process requires two forms of validation, or “proof” of your identity, in addition to your password. Even if someone gained access to one form of your identity validation, they would likely not have the other required pieces of information needed to successfully log in.

Last week, two separate federal judges struck down key provisions of President Trump’s executive orders regarding elections after New Mexico and more than 20 other states challenged the administration’s legal authority to use the orders to make sweeping changes to the country’s democratic process.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Denise Casper permanently blocked documentary proof of citizenship requirements that threatened to disenfranchise eligible voters, as outlined in a March 2025 executive order, ruling that they violated federal law and the separation of powers.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani found that the administration’s March 2026 executive order also violated the separation of powers, ruling that the administration cannot create a federal voter list and that the U.S. Postal Service cannot limit the ability of voters to vote by mail in the 2026 midterm elections.

The New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office continues to monitor actions taken by the current federal administration that may impact election administration, working closely with the New Mexico Department of Justice to respond swiftly as necessary.

New Mexico’s voters are encouraged to regularly review voting and election information that is available on the Secretary of State’s Office’s website at sos.nm.gov and NMVote.org in order to have the most up to date information and to make a plan to vote in general election this November.

The Center for Election Innovation & Research (CEIR) recognized New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver for her lifetime service in support of democracy and elections at its “A Decade of Defending Democracy” event on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, in Washington, D.C.

“Maggie has been a steady, principled voice for election integrity and voter access for years,” wrote CEIR Executive Director and Founder David Becker.

We are hiring for an IT Systems Administrator! This job exists primarily to manage and support the computer systems, software, and peripheral technology that are used by the end-users at the Secretary of State (SOS).

As a member of the infrastructure team, this position provides remote and in-person support to the SOS's employees. This position operates under general supervision regarding work priorities and uses problem solving to minimize system downtime and work interruptions.
