We were heartbroken early this week when we learned of Harry Mayo's passing. Rest in Peace Legend. Santa Cruz is not the same without you here.

Local surfing pioneer Harry Mayo, one of the founders of the famed Santa Cruz Surfing Club in the 1930s, died Monday afternoon at Dominican Oaks. He was 99.

O'Neill and the World Surf League are dusting off the cobwebs on one of surfing's top contest venues, Steamer Lane. For many years Santa Cruz was a regular stop for surfing's elite-level competition, and it built a reputation as the quintessential surfing amphitheater.
