🚧 ROAD WORK UPDATE: 2026 Pavement Management Project 🚧

Crews are back at it improving roads across Santa Cruz County. Here’s what to know:

📅 When: Now through September 3

🌙 Hours: 8:30 PM – 5:30 AM (overnight work)

📍 Where this round of work is happening:

Porter Street, from Oneil Lane to Soquel Drive. Expect a single lane closure with alternating lanes and flashing lights at the Soquel Dr./Porter St. and Soquel San Jose Road/Oneil Lane intersections.

Traffic control and detour signage will be in place. Please use alternate routes when you can and plan a little extra time for your trip.

🚧 HEADS UP, DISTRICT 1 🚧

Starting overnight on August 2, the southbound Highway 1 off-ramp at Bay Ave will close for about four months while crews rebuild it as part of the new bus-on-shoulder project.

Here's the detour: Stay on southbound Highway 1 and exit at Park Ave. Turn left onto Park Ave, continue onto Soquel Dr, and follow the signs back toward Porter St / Bay Ave.

Message boards and directional signs will guide you through the area, but plan on a little extra travel time while this work is underway.

This is part of the larger $78M Highway 1 auxiliary lane and bus-on-shoulder project between Bay/Porter and State Park Drive, expected to wrap up by fall 2026.

Please slow down and drive carefully through the work zone. Our crews deserve to get home safely too. 💛

🏃‍♀️ ROAD CLOSURES THIS SUNDAY: WHARF TO WHARF RACE

📅 Sunday, July 26
🕒 3:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

⚠️ DIFFERENT ROUTE THIS YEAR ⚠️
Because of the Murray Street bridge closure, the race is NOT following its usual course. Even if you know the Wharf to Wharf route by heart, check the map before you head out Sunday morning.

📍 Affected roads:
Portola Drive (at 30th Avenue) to East Cliff Drive, 7th Avenue, Eaton Street, Lake Avenue, 5th Avenue, East Cliff Drive, 41st Avenue, and Opal Cliff Drive to the Capitola city limits.

Traffic control personnel and law enforcement will be stationed along the course to direct commuters and keep emergency access open. If you're driving through Live Oak or Pleasure Point Sunday morning, plan for delays and use alternate routes when you can.

Event is weather permitting. Unforeseen conditions may affect the schedule.

Heads up, Los Gatos mountain neighbors: Stetson Road will be closed at Post Mile 0.18 today, Thursday, July 16 and Friday, July 17 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Crews are completing follow-up work from the culvert replacement and roadway restoration project finished in 2025.

During the closure, please use Skyland Road or Soquel San Jose Road as alternate routes. Plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow all posted detour signs.

Work is weather dependent and subject to change.

Today we celebrated two people who have given so much to Santa Cruz County.

Assistant County Executive Officer Elissa Benson helped guide our County through some of its toughest moments. Her steady leadership and commitment to public service made our organization stronger, and her impact will be felt for years to come.
Assistant Chief Probation Officer Valerie Thompson is also retiring after more than 12 years of service. She helped shape our Probation Department with professionalism and a real commitment to improving outcomes for youth and families across our community.

We talk a lot about programs and policies, but the people who quietly build strong teams, mentor the next generation, and make government work better every day matter just as much.

Elissa and Valerie, thank you for everything you've given to this community. Wishing you both the very best in what comes next.

⚠️ Traffic Advisory: Soquel-San Jose Road ⚠️

Drivers should be aware that striping removal work will take place on Soquel-San Jose Road this Saturday, May 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Work will occur between Soquel Drive and Olive Springs Road. Traffic impacts are expected to be minimal, but motorists may experience brief delays while crews are working.

Please use caution, follow all traffic control signs, and allow a little extra travel time if you're traveling through the area.

⚠️ BEACH HAZARDS WARNING ⚠️

Over the past few weeks, law enforcement and fire crews have responded to an increased number of water rescues. With warm weather expected this weekend, beaches across Santa Cruz County are expected to be crowded. Please keep safety a top priority:

•Never turn your back on the ocean.
•Watch for sneaker waves and changing surf conditions. These powerful waves can surge much higher and farther up the beach than expected.
•Know how to recognize and respond to rip currents.
•Keep children within arm’s reach near the water.
•Swim near staffed lifeguard towers whenever possible.
•Stay off rocks, jetties, and driftwood near the surf zone.

Elevated temperatures and a long-period southerly swell are creating dangerous ocean conditions. A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through 9:00 p.m. June 11, with hazardous surf expected through the weekend.

Stay alert, stay informed, and help keep our beaches safe.
