"The Sunbearer Trials is the first book in the Sunbearer Duology by Aiden Thomas, a Mexican-inspired young adult fantasy novel where ten teen semidioses compete in a series of dangerous trials to determine who will carry the sun's light to the world for another decade. The loser of the trials is sacrificed to the sun god, Sol, to replenish the sun's power and keep the chaotic Obsidian gods at bay. The story follows Teo, a trans Jade semidiós, who is unexpectedly chosen to compete and must fight for his survival and the chance to make the world a more just place."
