With warmer temperatures, low humidity, and increasingly dry fuels across Southern Utah, wildfire risk is on the rise.

Due to these conditions, burn permits are no longer being issued until the Fall Burn Season. Even small, controlled burns can quickly escape under current weather patterns—putting homes, open space, and our community at risk.

We’re asking everyone to do their part to prevent human-caused wildfires:
• Avoid any open burning
• Be cautious with equipment that can spark
• Properly dispose of smoking materials
• Stay aware of local restrictions and conditions

Our crews are ready—but prevention starts with all of us.

Let’s work together to keep our communities safe this fire season.

Creating defensible space around your home is one of the most effective ways to protect your property from wildfire.
In Southern Utah, dry fuels like cheatgrass, sagebrush, and juniper can allow fire to spread quickly—especially during periods of low humidity and high temperatures.

Taking proactive steps now can make a critical difference when seconds count.

🔥 Start with Zone 1 (0–5 feet):
Create a non-combustible area around your home using gravel, rock, or hardscape. Remove anything that can ignite from embers.

🌿 Zone 2 (5–30 feet):
Reduce and space vegetation. Trim trees, eliminate ladder fuels, and keep grasses short.

🌲 Zone 3 (30–100+ feet):
Thin native vegetation, remove dead brush, and break up continuous fuels to slow fire spread.

Wildfires don’t wait—and preparation matters.

A well-maintained defensible space can help protect your home, your neighbors, and responding firefighters.

🔥 Be Ready. Be Defensible.

From long days under the sun to long nights on the fireline, our crew assigned to Engine 342 has been working tirelessly on the wildfires in Nebraska. Battling active fire conditions, cutting line, and protecting communities, their commitment doesn’t stop when the sun goes down.

Late nights turn into early mornings, with little rest in between — but the mission remains the same: protect lives, property, and reducing environmental impacts.

Wildland firefighting demands grit, resilience, and teamwork. These moments capture just a glimpse of the hard work, determination, and sacrifice our firefighters bring to every assignment.

Engine 342 continues to represent our department with pride while deployed in Nebraska.

Over the past couple of days, the crew had the opportunity to take part in a large media day surrounding the Morrill Fire, where they also met with the Nebraska Governor and other state officials. The press conference highlighted the ongoing efforts on the incident and the collaborative work being done by crews from across the region.

As the incident progresses, the Critical Incident Management Team will be transitioning command of the Morrill Fire to a Type 3 Incident Management Team. Our task force will remain assigned in Ogallala, Nebraska through approximately March 31 before making the trip back home to Utah.

Today offered a meaningful change of pace. Taking a short break from fire operations, Engine 342 welcomed approximately 60 third-grade students from Ogallala Elementary for a tour of fire camp. The students were able to get a behind-the-scenes look at what daily life is like on an incident, explore the engine up close, and learn about the tools and teamwork that go into wildland firefighting.

Opportunities like this remind us that our role extends far beyond the fire line. No matter where we are deployed, we remain committed to building strong, interactive relationships with the communities we serve. Being able to connect with and inspire the next generation—even hundreds of miles from home—is something we’re proud to be a part of.

Community Engagement at Vista Charter School

Santa Clara–Ivins Fire & Rescue had a great time visiting Vista Charter School! Our crews provided students with a hands-on apparatus demonstration, walked through fire equipment, and talked about what to do in an emergency.

From learning how firefighters respond to calls, to understanding the importance of fire safety at home and school, these students asked great questions and showed incredible curiosity.

Engaging with our community—especially our youth—is a key part of what we do. We are committed not only to protecting our community today, but also to educating and preparing the next generation for a safer tomorrow.

Thank you to the students and staff at Vista Charter School for the warm welcome!

E342 put in a lot of hard work this week at the Morrill Fire in Nebraska. They left Utah, 6 days ago, to fulfill a resource order for help. When the crew arrived, the fire was over 550,000 acres with approximately 10% containment. As of this morning, the fire was mapped with 643,047 acres burned at 98% containment.

Southern Utah is experiencing dry fuel conditions, low relative humidity, and rising temperatures—all of which significantly increase wildfire risk.

When fuels like grass, brush, and vegetation dry out, they become highly receptive to ignition. Combine that with low humidity and warm temperatures, and fires can start easier, spread faster, and become more difficult to control.

Because of these conditions, the burn window is closing early to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires and protect our community.

🚫 Last day for open burning: March 31

We appreciate your cooperation in helping keep our communities safe.

We had the pleasure of welcoming approximately 75 kindergarten students from Arrowhead Canyon Elementary to the station!

The students got an up-close look at our fire engines and ambulances, learned about fire safety, and met some of the firefighters and paramedics who serve their community every day. From seeing rescue tools to hearing the sirens, there were plenty of smiles and excitement all around!

Visits like these are a great opportunity to teach fire safety early and help build trust and familiarity with emergency responders.

Thank you to the students and staff at Arrowhead Canyon Elementary for spending part of your day with us—we enjoyed having you at the station!

Members of Santa Clara–Ivins Fire & Rescue recently completed our annual arduous fitness testing and wildland fire refresher training. These trainings ensure our firefighters meet the physical and operational standards required to safely and effectively respond to wildland fires in our region.

The arduous pack test and refresher courses help maintain the strength, endurance, and knowledge necessary to operate in demanding environments while protecting lives, property, and the natural landscapes that surround our community.

Continuous training and maintaining proficiency are critical parts of our commitment to the residents and visitors we serve. By preparing year-round, our crews are ready when the call comes.
