BART Silicon Valley

BART Silicon Valley BART Silicon Valley Construction on the second phase of the project will commence as additional funding is secured.

VTA's Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Extension is a 16-mile extension of the existing BART system to San Jose, Milpitas and Santa Clara, which will be delivered through a phased approach. The first phase, the Berryessa Extension, is a 10-mile, two-station extension, beginning in Fremont south of the future BART Warm Springs Station and proceeding in the former Union Pacific Railroad

right-of-way through Milpitas, the location of the first station, and then to the Berryessa area of north San Jose, at the second station. VTA continues project development activities for the second 6-mile phase of the project that includes a 5.1 mile-long subway tunnel through downtown San Jose, and ends at grade in Santa Clara near the Caltrain Station.

Getting to the bottom of the launch structure safely and efficiently is a top priority at VTA’s Bart Silicon Valley Phase II West Portal site. 🏗️🛗

That’s why crews now have access to the project’s first construction elevator, fully installed and operational.

This highly durable elevator was installed using a concrete foundation with a steel mast anchored at the base.

A steel platform was then bolted into the concrete block at the launch structure to provide stability and support during site operations.

Fun fact: The elevator can carry up to 4,400 pounds!

The BART Silicon Valley Phase II Extension Project helps complete a more connected Bay Area, bringing us closer to the vision of “ringing the Bay with rail.” Faster trips, better access, and a more seamless transit network for generations to come.

Not all rebar is created equal, and some are designed to be cut. 🛠️

At the tunnel eye section of the Caterpillar Shaft, crews are using Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer rebar (GFRP), a lightweight, non-corrosive alternative to steel.

The tunnel eye is reinforced with a combination of steel and GFRP rebar, spliced and connected.

When the Tunnel Boring Machine arrives, it will cut through the GFRP reinforced portion, supporting a smoother and safer breakthrough.

Fun fact: GFRP rebar is about four times lighter than steel and stronger in tension, making it ideal for this exact job.

BSVII's June 2026 Construction Update is now live!

Construction is continuing at West Portal, where crews are advancing excavation and underground support wall work to move the project forward.

Nearby neighbors may notice periodic crane activity, truck traffic and intermittent construction noise, including overnight.

At the 28th Street/Little Portugal Station site, crews will continue to conduct soils testing and drilling activities, with occasional drilling noise during weekday daytime hours.

🚧 And a heads up for drivers:

Utility work connecting gas infrastructure along Brokaw Road will finish up and will require temporary lane closures and detours, with increased traffic near the work zone.

Guardrails may seem simple, but they play a big role in keeping our crews safe. 🚧

Across the site, temporary steel guardrails help protect workers and pedestrians on elevated surfaces and around active work areas, especially near the Caterpillar Shaft.

They’re securely bolted into concrete and inspected weekly to make sure everything is working exactly as it should!

Happy ! VTA’s Gil N. enjoys biking to work as a transportation planner for the VTA BART Silicon Phase II Extension Project.

By extending  service through San Jose and Santa Clara, we’re ringing the Bay with transit, and biking is a great way to achieve your last mile on the way to work.

During last week’s National Construction Safety Week, 3M presented on available fall protection methods to the Project team. 🦺

Through a live demonstration, crews saw the true force of a fall and reviewed fall preparation techniques using special equipment and weights. They also saw a harness deployment showing how fall protection equipment performs when it’s put to the test.

The presentation translated those visuals into everyday action, reinforcing why it is important to check safety gear every day. It was emphasized that daily habits like inspecting ropes, stitching, straps and labels are crucial to ensuring that everything is safe and unused.

Safety Week reinforced what drives the work every day: awareness, preparation and people looking out for one another 100% of the time.

We’re wrapping up National Safety Construction Week with a spotlight on our on-site Construction Safety Manager, Jason Pielech! Jason comes from a family in the safety industry, and is passionate about helping to build and strengthen a positive safety environment.

This week serves as an important reminder that every safety regulation and procedure matters. It’s with these procedures that we’ve achieved 800,000 safe working hours since construction began in Summer 2024!

Thank you to our hardworking crews, staff and leadership who help reinforce the values and initiatives that keep our worksite safe!
