Curious about voting, election safety, and how to be an informed voter?

Join us for our next DemWomen Social Lab, where we’ll hear from local leaders and community organizers about voting safety, finding reliable information, and practical ways to help others navigate the voting process.

We’ll also explore what it means to be an A+ voter—informed, prepared, and able to separate reliable election information from misinformation.

As always, this won’t be a lecture. We’ll hear briefly from our featured guests, then gather in small groups to ask questions, share perspectives, and learn from one another.

Gloria Steinem: Her Torch Still Burns

Gloria Steinem’s work, her words, and her unwavering optimism changed generations of women. She inspired us and gave us permission to become who we truly are, individually and collectively.

I remember taking an apolitical friend to the Arlington Theatre in 2017 to hear Gloria speak. Throughout the evening, I watched my friend’s face transform as Gloria’s words reached into her soul and touched her heart. That was Gloria’s gift. She could awaken something within us that we may not have known was there.

For so many women, Gloria became an internal maternal voice, reminding us of our worth, our strength, and our responsibility to one another. She believed deeply in the collective power of women and in our ability to create change through empathy, courage, and action.

Despite her extraordinary influence, Gloria carried herself with humility. She did not use her torch simply to illuminate her own path. She used it to light the torches of others, trusting each of us to carry that light forward.

“Hope is a form of planning,” she reminded us. Her optimism was never passive. It was a call to imagine a better world and then work together to create it.

Although Gloria has left us, her hope and activism remain. I will carry her words close to my heart as I stand beside my sisters in arms, continuing the fight for a more equal, compassionate, and just world.

Her light will continue to shine, and her torch will always illuminate the way for future generations.

Rise Up,

Claudette Roehrig
Board President, Democratic Women of Santa Barbara County
