Twenty-five years ago today, our nation was forever changed.

Santa Barbara Unified joins our community and nation in honoring the lives lost on September 11, 2001, along with the courage and service shown in the days and years that followed.

This morning, a display of flags at Dos Pueblos High School marked the anniversary and offered a moment for reflection.

We remember. We honor. We reflect.

HEAT UPDATE: REGULAR SCHOOL SCHEDULE FRIDAY

Cooler weather is expected to return tomorrow, and all Santa Barbara Unified schools will operate on their regular schedules. No school is forecast to meet the District’s criteria for a heat-related minimum day or early release.

While schedules remain unchanged, heat precautions continue across our campuses. Schools are increasing access to water and cooling breaks, modifying physical activity and outdoor time, using cooler indoor spaces when needed, and closely monitoring students for signs of heat-related illness.

The District uses temperature, humidity and National Weather Service HeatRisk levels to guide decisions and will continue monitoring conditions.

Air-Conditioning Infrastructure
Historically, Santa Barbara’s mild climate meant school facilities were constructed without central HVAC systems. While the District continues to install air conditioning through bond-funded projects, grant opportunities, and facility upgrades, retrofitting older campuses presents financial and logistical challenges. The District continues to explore funding mechanisms to expand HVAC coverage across all campuses, including considering a new bond that would go on the ballot in the next election cycle in 2028.
