Assemblymember Gregg Hart

Assemblymember Gregg Hart Assemblymember Gregg Hart was elected to the California State Assembly in November of 2022 to represent the 37th Assembly District.

With a deep understanding of local people and local issues, he is proud to have served the Santa Barbara community for more than 30 years – as a Planning Commissioner, City Council Member, California Coastal Commissioner, and Santa Barbara County Supervisor. Dedication to public service came naturally to Assemblymember Hart, as he was inspired by his parents. They spent their lives working for the

community: his mother worked as an elementary school teacher and his father was the Library Director for the City and County of Santa Barbara. Assemblymember Hart began his professional career as a Legislative Assistant for former State Assemblymember Jack O'Connell and went on to become the original manager of the Santa Barbara County Association of Government’s (SBCAG) Traffic Solutions program. There, he promoted local green and sustainable transportation options. Later, his expertise in this arena led him to serve as the Deputy Executive Director for SBCAG, supporting regional efforts to widen the 101 freeway and improve bus and passenger rail service throughout Santa Barbara County. Growing up in Santa Barbara, Hart attended local public schools, then graduated from Santa Barbara City College and the University of California, Santa Barbara. For more than twenty years, he owned and operated Transitions Preschool, a local, family business dedicated to early childhood education and quality childcare. With a long history of fighting to increase educational opportunities, reduce poverty, prepare for emergencies, and support the health and safety of the people of California's Central Coast, Assemblymember Hart will put the needs of Santa Barbara County and southern San Luis Obispo County front and center in Sacramento.

When survivors speak up, we must listen and act. From California’s agricultural fields to the White House, predatory behavior cannot be overlooked.

The movements for farmworker and immigrant rights have never been about one person. At this juncture, we must continue to champion the hard-fought victories of these movements while holding accountable those who have abused trust.

I join my colleagues in outrage and disgust. I believe and support the survivors. We will work with haste and intentionality to make sure that California’s values are reflected in our telling of history, celebration of public holidays, and enactment of policies.

I was proud to honor Primitiva Hernandez of Lompoc at the 2026 California Woman of the Year ceremony at the State Capitol. Primitiva serves as Executive Director of the 805UndocuFund—one of the largest grassroots mutual aid organizations in California, serving families up and down the Central Coast.

Primitiva is a proud immigrant from Mexico, a DACA recipient, and daughter of farmworkers. I first encountered Primitiva’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the 805UndocuFund worked to distribute aid to families left out of government economic relief programs.

Today, Primitiva is on the front lines supporting our immigrant neighbors who face unprecedented threats. California is a better place because of the efforts of leaders like Primitiva. Next month, Primitiva will be joined by other phenomenal leaders in a celebration of women’s leadership on the Central Coast.

My statement on the President’s reckless executive order that exploits the crisis in Iran to justify harm to our coastline:

“President Trump’s catastrophic move to override State environmental laws by invoking the Defense Production Act is another step on the slippery slope toward authoritarianism. If the President can attack a foreign country without authorization from Congress and override state laws with unprecedented dubious legal authority – what is left of our Constitution?”

When it comes to child care, California’s message to President Trump is simple: hands off.

This morning, I chaired a hearing regarding the Trump Administration’s actions to disrupt funding for California’s child care programs. Having previously operated a family-owned child care center, I understand the critical role that quality child care plays in setting our kids up for success and supporting working families.

The President’s masked immigration enforcement campaign has intentionally brought chaos to communities, subjected immigrant families to constant fear, and led to the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renée Good. I stand with my legislative colleagues in rejecting the President’s lawless immigration enforcement campaign.

As news broke on the killing of VA nurse Alex Pretti by federal immigration authorities in Minnesota on Saturday, I gathered with Santa Barbara community members who were peacefully protesting unconstitutional and authoritarian actions by immigration agents at the direction of President Trump. I echo the calls of the millions of Americans who are raising their voices for justice.

More than 5 million Californians depend on SNAP benefits to keep food on the table. Food assistance must not be used as a political football. As of Thursday, Californians in need received their latest SNAP payments — but the Supreme Court’s temporary decision last night increases uncertainty.

Over the summer, we welcomed the family of barrier-breaking Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela to the Capitol to designate November 1st as Fernando Valenzuela Day throughout California. Valenzuela provided inspiration on and off the field, especially through his leadership in California’s Mexican American and Latino communities.

As we celebrate the life and legacy of Valenzuela, we also cheer on his successors on the field — Go Dodgers! ⚾️🧢
