The mansion at Bellosguardo was rebuilt between 1933-1936 on a 23 acre bluff above Santa Barbara as a substantial French-style Beaux-Arts estate using solid materials like concrete and stone, designed to withstand strong coastal winds and earthquakes.

The “lighter” decorative sections were made from concrete mixed with marble chunks, a technique sometimes used to create a subtle sparkle and visual richness. When sunlight hits these surfaces, the embedded marble fragments reflect light, giving the façade added depth and refinement.

Bellosguardo was built with exceptionally thick 14-inch reinforced concrete walls, which made the structure extremely solid and durable. On top of that structural core, the exterior was finished with a 3-inch veneer of Indiana limestone, a material prized for its light color, uniform texture, and classical elegance.
