The role of the Registrar of Voters is to serve as the County’s chief election official and lead the organization responsible for conducting elections,

verifying petitions and maintaining voter records. As you can imagine, a tremendous amount of work is required to operate the Orange County Registrar of Voters department, the nation’s fifth largest voting jurisdiction. Our Election Operations is at the heart of it all. Election Operations plays a large role in the strategic and tactical decision making that keeps us running and able to produce fair and accurate elections. With more than 1,000,000 ballots cast, 1,000 Customer Service Representatives recruited, nearly 200 Vote Centers in operation, 100+ ballot drop boxes deployed, 1.8 million vote-by-mail ballots printed, mailed and processed, and 1.8 million Voter Information Guides produced and delivered – all of this occurring each countywide election, that is no easy task. Many factors can disrupt our operations but we have multiple teams in place to ensure the smoothest experience for voters. One example is our exclusive Rapid Deployment Teams (RDT) and our central dispatch operations. We have assigned team members throughout the County during each election – each one working to keep Vote Centers open and voters voting. Among these 300 dedicated people are our elite RDT units – paramedic style teams that can be dispatched to fix the most complex problems at Vote Centers. Our central dispatch team monitors their movement throughout the County and can dispatch them using the same technology employed by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to track law enforcement. This specialized unit is just one example of our vast Election Operations team that keeps our operations running smoothly. Our teams literally work around-the-clock during elections to ensure all voters can cast their ballot and know that it is secured and counted on time. Registrar of Voters will post the next unofficial results update today at 5 p.m.

We posted the results from more than 800,000 ballots cast in the 2026 Statewide Direct Primary Election at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10 at ocvote.gov/results.

This included the votes from accepted Vote-By-Mail ballots cast from May 4 through June 2 and in-person ballots, including provisional ballots, cast from May 30 through June 2.

The only ballots that can still be added to the results before the election is certified on Friday, June 26 are Vote-By-Mail ballots that were challenged for a missing signature or a signature that did not compare to the voter's signatures in their registration file.

Since Wednesday, June 10, Registrar of Voters has added the following number of cured Vote-By-Mail ballots and Orange County ballots forwarded by other counties to the unofficial election results report:

▪️June 11 = 527 ballots
▪️June 12 = 153 ballots
▪️June 15 = 130 ballots

Given the small number of ballots being added each day and the statutory requirement to post updated unofficial election results reports at least twice a week during the canvass, Registrar of Voters will post updated results on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week and next week. Following the posting of the updated results, the number of challenged ballots eligible for curing will also be reported at ocvote.gov/results/whats-left-to-count.

Note: Our Unofficial Election Results only includes ballots cast in Orange County. The overall results of statewide contests or for districts that cross county lines can be viewed on the Secretary of State's website at electionresults.sos.ca.gov.

Orange County voters who received a signature challenge notice on their 2026 Statewide Direct Primary Election Vote-By-Mail ballot have until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24 to submit a cure statement.

Registrar of Voters staff carefully review and compare every ballot envelope signature to the voter's registration record. When a signature doesn't compare or is missing, voters are notified by mail (and email or phone, if provided) and given the chance to cure the challenge before their ballot can be counted.

In this election, more than 11,900 ballots have been signature challenged, and as of today, 2,678 of those challenged ballots have been successfully cured.

Voters can submit their cure statement by mail, in person at 1300 S. Grand Ave, Bldg. C, Santa Ana, by email, fax, or through our secure mobile cure application at ocvote.gov/votebymail.

State law prohibits the Registrar of Voters from certifying the election before Friday, June 26 to provide voters the opportunity to cure signature challenged ballots up until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24.

On Monday, June 15 at 8 a.m., ROV will conduct a post-election Logic & Accuracy (L&A) test of the voting system equipment and software to ensure the accuracy of the results. The public is welcome to observe this important part of the election verification process at 1300 S. Grand Ave., Bldg. C, Santa Ana.

This test ensures that the equipment and software used to count votes are still functioning correctly. A similar L&A test was also performed before the election began.

During the post-election L&A test, each of the approximately 400 ballot scanners used in this election will be re-tested. Each scanner will process test ballots to confirm that it continues to count votes accurately.

All But Challenged Ballots Are in the Count

The votes from all accepted Vote-By-Mail and provisional ballots have been included in the unofficial results of the 2026 Statewide Direct Primary Election posted today, June 10. The results can be found on the Registrar of Voters’ website at ocvote.gov/results.

Only about 10,000 ballots could still be cured and added to the results. These ballots have been challenged because the signature was missing from the return envelope, the envelope signature didn’t compare to the voter’s signatures in their registration file, or the voter didn’t provide proof of identity when registering.

The Unofficial Election Results report is updated at 5 p.m. each weekday until the election is certified by the Registrar of Voters. After updated results are posted, a What’s Left to Process report is updated as well at ocvote.gov/results/whats-left-to-count.

As of 5 p.m. today, more than 800,000 ballots have been counted.

Pursuant to California law, voters with challenged ballots have until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24 to cure the challenge. This prohibits the Registrar of Voters from certifying the Orange County results of the Primary before Friday, June 26.

Note: Our Unofficial Election Results only includes ballots cast in Orange County. The overall results of statewide contests or for districts that cross county lines can be viewed on the Secretary of State's website at electionresults.sos.ca.gov.

Registrar of Voters invites the public to observe our Risk Limiting Audit today, Friday, June 5 at 10 a.m. in person at 1300 S. Grand Ave., Bldg. C, Santa Ana, or via live stream at ocvote.gov/observe.

Registrar of Voters staff will use a 10-sided die to generate a 20-digit random seed number. Audit software will then use that number to select ballots for manual examination by four-person review teams, establishing statistical confidence in the accuracy of contest outcomes. Hand counting of those ballots to verify the votes tabulated by the voting system software is expected to begin on June 15.

Join us in completing this important step of the election verification process, online or in person. In-person attendees may have the opportunity to roll the die.
