Chispa Chispa is a brave organizing political home for young Latinxs in Orange County. Chispa was created as a response to the results of the 2016 election results.

Despite the growth of the Latinx population, the country elected a President who built his campaign on attacks against communities of color, and who quickly moved to implement racist policies that seek to criminalize and police people of color. Locally, Orange County remains as conservative as ever, and Latinxs remain marginalized due to a lack of political clout. Even in Santa Ana, which maintain

s a Latinx City Council, Latinxs find themselves being pushed out by gentrification, a lack of affordable housing, and a growing preference by the city to divest from investments in youth programming in exchange for investments in failed tough on crime policies and cuts to police accountability. Chispa was born in order to build a political home for young Latinxs to grow the people power necessary to hold elected officials accountable and responsive to the needs of working class Latinxs in the county.

Shame on David Penaloza. He voted to approve the Flock Surveillance contract in our city. Now, the data collected can be sold and shared to 3rd parties like ICE and DHS without us knowing about it.

Across the country, cities are terminating Flock contracts due to privacy violations, lack of transparency, data-sharing concerns, cybersecurity failures, and misuse connected to immigration enforcement.

Councilmember Jessie Lopez warned David about this. He didn’t care. He voted to surveil his constituents. Now he wants your vote. Shame on him.

Vote Jessie Lopez before June 2nd for CA State Assembly District 68. She has proven to be, time and time again, the real champion for immigrant families in Santa Ana and Orange County.

Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres.

This is who’s with David Peñaloza. These corporations are sponsoring his campaign and have invested $4 MILLION to buy this election. What do you think David would give them in return? We can’t afford to find out. SAY NO TO DAVID PEÑALOZA.

Ellos están con David Peñaloza. Estas corporaciones están patrocinando su campaña y han invertido $4 MILLONES para comprar esta elección. ¿Que crees que David les daría a cambio? No podemos arriesgarnos. DILE NO A DAVID PEÑALOZA.

David Penaloza voted to bring Flock surveillance cameras into Santa Ana despite growing national concerns about privacy, police abuse, wrongful arrests, and data sharing with outside organizations like ICE and DHS.

AD 68 deserves leaders who protect our civil rights and privacy, not politicians willing to expand surveillance systems that have repeatedly harmed communities, especially immigrants.

David Penaloza cannot be trusted to put our community first. Reject David Penaloza on Election Day.

The same corporate landlord and realtor interests that fought against rent control, tenant protections, and affordable housing are now pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into this election for one reason:

Gift David Penaloza an election, who they trust to protect their interests, not working families.

While we struggle with rising costs and families are pushed out of our communities, these special interests are trying to buy themselves another reliable vote in Sacramento.

Corporate interests are pouring millions of dollars to block David’s opponent, Jessie Lopez, because she is supportive of stronger tenant protections and policies aimed at keeping housing affordable.

Don’t let corporations buy this seat. Reject David Penaloza.

Rechaza David Penaloza.

Last night, our Organizing Director, Tanya, spoke during public comment calling on the City to end its contract with Flock surveillance technology.

Last year, the Council agreed to bring the contract back for public review, but that discussion still has not happened.

Flock surveillance has remained a major concern for community members because of the threats it poses to privacy, civil liberties, and public trust. Santa Ana residents deserve transparency and real oversight, not expanded surveillance without accountability.

We are proud to announce that our Chispa members voted to endorse Hector Bustos for re-election to the Santa Ana Unified School District Board! Hector is a deeply rooted community leader who has consistently fought to protect and uplift students, families, and educators in Santa Ana.

“Hector Bustos is the kind of bold, values-driven leader we need on the school board. From defending immigrant families during moments of crisis to expanding resources for student success, Hector has shown what it means to lead with integrity and put our community first,” said Bulmaro Vicente, Policy and Political Director.

Chispa is supporting Hector because he brings both lived experience and a proven track record of results. As a lifelong Santa Ana resident and the first openly LGBTQ+ elected official in the city, Hector has led efforts to expand mental health resources, strengthen career pathways for students, and ensure our schools remain safe and supportive spaces for all. He has not shied away from difficult decisions and continues to advocate for transparency, accountability, and long-term stability for the district.

We are excited to support Hector Bustos as he continues his leadership and works to ensure every student and family in Santa Ana has the opportunity to thrive. Join Chispa members in supporting Hector Bustos for the Santa Ana Unified School District Board.
