Sometimes, it doesn’t take much to turn a not-so-good day into a GREAT one!

Officer Gunner was out doing some community policing today when he crossed paths with these kiddos. What started as an ordinary day quickly turned into smiles, laughs, and a little time getting to know some of our youngest community members.

These are the moments that remind us what community policing is really about. It’s not always about calls, reports, or traffic stops - it’s about building relationships, making connections, and letting our kids know that we’re here for them.

Officer Gunner, we think you (and the stuffed animals) made their day! 💙

On September 1, 2026, officers responded to a report of a domestic violence incident, resulting in multiple injuries. The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Our Criminal Investigations Division immediately began working the case and secured an arrest warrant for the suspect. Patrol officers located and arrested the suspect the same day. The suspect is currently in custody.

We want to thank our CID detectives and patrol officers for their swift work in bringing this case to a resolution, and for helping ensure the victim could return to a place of safety.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available 24/7 through the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233, or you can reach out to a local shelter.

📺 And now, for today’s episode of…THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW!

Why can a police officer ask you to step out of your vehicle during a traffic stop?

You may have heard someone say, “The officer can’t make me get out of my car.”
Actually, the U.S. Supreme Court has addressed this very issue.

⚖️ Pennsylvania v. Mimms (1977)

The Supreme Court ruled that during a lawful traffic stop, an officer may order the driver to step out of the vehicle. The Court recognized that officer safety is a legitimate and important concern during traffic stops. (Justia Law)

⚖️ Maryland v. Wilson (1997)

The Supreme Court later extended the rule in Mimms to passengers. During a lawful traffic stop, an officer may order passengers to exit the vehicle as well, pending completion of the stop. (Legal Information Institute)

🚨 Why does this matter?

Traffic stops can be unpredictable and can put officers in a vulnerable position. Having the driver and passengers outside the vehicle can allow officers to better observe everyone involved and reduce some of the risks associated with approaching occupied vehicles.

The bottom line:
If you are stopped by law enforcement, follow the officer’s instructions, remain calm, and ask questions respectfully if you don’t understand what is being requested.

Knowing your rights is important.
Understanding the law is important, too.
