The City of Sanford continues to make progress on the new Fire & EMS Headquarters project while working closely with Maine DEP, EPA, and environmental consultants throughout the environmental review process.

The Courtney Cleaners site underwent extensive testing before the project began, and environmental review has always been part of the project planning process. Recent testing has shown site conditions are more favorable than originally anticipated, with no soil requiring hazardous waste classification.

The project continues to move forward, with materials on order so on-site work can proceed as soon as final DEP approvals are the revised Soil Management Plan is finalized. The project is on target to be completed within its original overall timeframe.

The City Hall and Offices will be closed on Thursday, June 18, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth. The transfer station will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026. Trash and recycling pickup schedules will remain unchanged.

What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration marking the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, the last enslaved African Americans were informed of their freedom. Juneteenth is a day for honoring the journey and resilience of Black Americans, and a celebration of freedom.

Comp Plan Community Input Series – June Edition

Every month, the City of Sanford will ask a few short Questions of the Month as part of our Comprehensive Plan update. These questions are designed to gather your ideas, priorities, and vision for our community, so your voice helps guide decisions about land use, development, parks, roads, sidewalks, and more over the next 20 years.

June Topic - Growth & Development
This month’s questions focus on the types of development you would like to see in Sanford and where they should be located. Each question includes images that illustrate the general size, scale, and form of different development types; when responding, focus on the overall development type and scale rather than specific design details in the images. Your input will directly inform policies that guide future growth, investment, and decision-making in Sanford.

Thank You to the Team Behind Election Day!

As Election Day comes to a close, we want to thank the many staff members and volunteers who make voting possible in Sanford and Springvale.

While voters see the polls open for just one day, preparing for an election takes weeks of planning and coordination. The City Clerk's Office spends countless hours processing absentee ballots, registering voters, answering questions, verifying voter status, testing voting equipment, training election workers, and ensuring every aspect of the election complies with state law.

The election team also transports and sets up voting equipment, prepares signage and materials, and transforms Sanford High School into a polling location capable of serving thousands of voters. After the polls close, the work continues with tabulating results, securing election materials, and breaking down and returning equipment.

Thank you to our City Clerk's Office, Election Clerk Sue Cote, wardens, poll workers, Parks and Recreation staff, and everyone else who worked behind the scenes to support the election process and thank you to everyone who participated in yesterday's election. See you all again in November!

Join us in wishing Lieutenant Tim DeHaven a very happy retirement! Thank you for your decades of dedicated service to the Sanford Police Department and our community!

Today, the Sanford Police Department says farewell to Lt. Tim DeHaven as he retires after 33 years of dedicated service to the City of Sanford.

Tim's career is a testament to hard work, leadership, and commitment. Over the course of three decades, he rose through the ranks from Field Training Officer to Corporal, Sergeant, and ultimately Lieutenant. Along the way, he helped train and mentor countless officers, leaving a lasting impact on generations of Sanford police officers. Tim was also an original member of the Southern Maine Special Response Team, serving during the early formation of the team and helping build a program that continues to serve our region today.

This morning, Chief Eric Small had the honor of presenting Tim with his retirement shadow box, retirement identification, and service weapon, recognizing a career defined by professionalism, integrity, and service to the community.

"Tim was a cop's cop," said Chief Small. "He was the kind of leader officers trusted because he was always approachable, always willing to listen, and you knew he would take care of his team. He spent 33 years serving the City of Sanford with professionalism, integrity, and quiet leadership. It has been an honor to serve alongside him, and his impact on this department will be felt for years to come."

On behalf of the Sanford Police Department and the community we proudly serve, thank you, Tim, for 33 years of sacrifice, and commitment. Congratulations on a well-earned retirement. We wish you and your family health, happiness, and success in the years ahead.
