One day, a long, long time ago, Frank Layton and I (both now retired from the Sanford Fire Department) were sitting at the firehouse asking ourselves a simple question: What can we do? How can we help?

After seeing local children suffer burn injuries and witnessing the devastation those families faced—especially at Christmas—we knew we wanted to do something. We wanted to help burned children, burn survivors, and their families in any way we could.

We took our idea to our Fire Chief at the time, Wayne Barber. After discussing it, he quickly got on board, and in 1996, we hosted the very first 3-Alarm Toy Drive.

Over the years, we’ve been blessed with incredible support, strong partnerships, and the unwavering generosity of the people of Sanford and Lee County. Lord, the stories we could tell of this wonderful event and the lives it has touched.

In 2000, Frank and I still felt called to do more, so we started the Lee County Chapter of the Firefighters Burned Children Fund, continuing our mission to support burned children and burn survivors—both locally and statewide—along with our friends at the NC Jaycee Burn Center, which we first visited back in 1996.

Here we are in 2025, and the 3-Alarm Toy Drive is still going strong, still hosted at the Sanford Fire Department. But make no mistake—you, the supporters, are the true backbone of this event.

On December 17, 2025, members of the Sanford Fire Department and the Lee County Firefighters Burned Children Fund loaded up a 6x12 enclosed trailer packed full of toys, gifts, games, and so much more—including a brand-new rolling medical cabinet. We then headed to UNC to meet our dear friends at the NC Jaycee Burn Center. Staff were waiting outside with carts as we unloaded and delivered everything to the Burn Center. We also provided a meal for staff, families, and patients who were able to eat.

This marked the 30th time we’ve walked through those doors for our Annual Christmas Holiday Visit—bringing gifts, love, and hope.

We received amazing support from our friends at the Elks Lodge, who collected toys and donated Kindles and wireless headphones, as well as from the Coal Miners Diner.

Thank you all for your continued support. We wish everyone—both at the Burn Center and beyond—a Blessed and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

And if we happened to overlook anyone who helped in any way, please know we thank you too.

The holiday season is a beautiful time… but for many in our community, it’s also a heavy one. And while we gather close with the people we love, there’s a special group who can’t be home this season — children and families facing the unimaginable at the NC Jaycee Burn Center.

Since 1996, the Sanford Fire Department & Lee County Firefighters have carried a tradition born straight from the heart:

A mission started by caring firefighters who simply wanted to bring light into a dark time… and it continues because of people just like you.

This year’s Toy Drive kicks off Friday, November 28th, 2025 and runs through December 15th, 2025.
Drop-offs can be made at any City of Sanford Fire Station — just look for the signs!

And don’t let the name fool you… we collect SO much more than toys!

See if you have a chapter in your county to help support burned children, burn survivors and the needs of the NC Jaycee Burn Center and Baptist Burn Center. Our chapters proudly support their after care events like Camp Celebrate, Family Camp, Teen Camp, Survivor Retreat, and more.

We have 100 counties in NC and only 40 Chapters, so you may see that your county could be the one we're missing! We will have information for you to take back your your department and county to get them on board.

Well Folks, July 26, 2025 was a very hot and humid day for the 25th Anniversary Lee County Firefighters Burned Children Fund Charity Benefit Golf Tournament, however it did not stop ther 120 dedicated golfers from taking the field at the Beautiful Quail Ridge Golf Course.

Volunteers arrived at 6am getting things unloaded and the check in area set up, those awesome sponsorship signs placed on the assigned holes. Then our golfers started to arrive at 7am checking in with our awesome volunteers, obtaining their team assignments, getting their gifts, spending some time on the putting green and driving range.

Then at 8:30am, they gathered and reviewed all rules of the event, advised of what to do in case of an emergency, advised of the beverage carts that would be running, introduced one of our local youth burn survivors, had prayer over the event and the day, then they took to the field.

As the golfers were out doing their thing our awesome volunteers were doing theirs, getting the feeding area and awards area prepared, running the beverage carts keeping folks hydrated, preparing the food.

After a very good day of golf the teams began coming in and turning their score cards and getting their food.

After all the cards were collect by Quail Ridge Staff and recorded the awards were given.
