Partner & Community Spotlight: The Joel Fund

This month, Veterans Upward Bound is proud to highlight our community partner, The Joel Fund.

The Joel Fund is dedicated to helping veterans and military families reconnect, recover, and thrive within their communities. Through programs focused on resiliency, connection, and support, they continue to make a meaningful impact across North Carolina.

Their services include:
• Operation Art, providing healing and recovery through community focused art programs
• Operation Connect, creating warm referrals to resources and services throughout North Carolina
• Operation Vessel, offering one time financial assistance to veterans facing hardship with housing, utilities, and food expenses

We are especially excited to congratulate The Joel Fund on the grand opening of their new facility on June 12. This milestone represents their continued commitment to serving veterans and expanding their ability to support those who have served our nation.

Strong communities are built through collaboration, and we are grateful for organizations like The Joel Fund that stand beside veterans every day.

To the TRiO Veterans Upward Bound Staff,

I have the deepest gratitude for the TRiO Veterans Upward Bound program and for the unwavering support and guidance they have shown me since I entered the program. My decision to return to school at my big age was not an easy one. I was anxious to continue my education, but I honestly didn’t know where to start. It was the personnel at the Veterans Upward Bound program that gently guided me with patience, understanding, and encouragement. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, they broke everything down into manageable steps and reassured me that I was capable of achieving my goals.
The program not only offered support in the form of tutors for certain classes, but it also offered me a sense of community that I had not felt since leaving the military. I found myself surrounded by people who genuinely cared about my success and who celebrated the victories with me. The encouragement I received has allowed me to continue on this path of higher education with confidence and a renewed sense of purpose.
The Veterans Upward Bound program hosts a variety of workshops, events, and activities that not only enriched my educational journey but also helped me feel connected to my fellow veterans. Because of the program, I was able to connect with an amazing VSO who helped me navigate the disability process with ease. The VUB program is more than just practical guidance; it is unwavering support, a source of information and inspiration, and a family that reminded me that I was never alone on this journey through higher education.

Respectfully and gratefully,

Colby Vilardo

Throughout June, we recognize several important military observances that highlight the history, sacrifice, and continued strength of the armed forces community. These dates serve as reminders of the courage demonstrated by service members across generations and the importance of continuing to support veterans long after their time in uniform.

The month begins with the remembrance of D Day on June 6, honoring the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944 that helped change the course of World War II. On June 12, Women Veterans Day recognizes the historic contributions and sacrifices made by women who have served in every branch of the military. June 14 marks both the Army Birthday and Flag Day, celebrating the establishment of the United States Army in 1775 and honoring the symbol that represents our nation and the freedoms defended by those who serve. Later in the month, the Coast Guard Auxiliary Birthday recognizes the volunteers who continue supporting maritime safety and national missions.

June also serves as National PTSD Awareness Month, with June 27 recognized as National PTSD Awareness Day. This observance helps shine a light on the invisible wounds many veterans and service members carry and reinforces the importance of connection, understanding, and access to support resources. Raising awareness helps reduce stigma and encourages those struggling to seek help without hesitation.

As we move through the month, take time to reflect on the meaning behind these observances, honor those who served, and continue supporting the military and veteran community through awareness, education, and connection.

Connection is one of the most important factors in long term personal growth and wellness, especially during the transition from military service to civilian life. Many veterans leave environments built around teamwork, accountability, and shared experiences, only to find themselves navigating civilian life without the same support system. That sudden change can create feelings of isolation, frustration, or disconnection.

Strong support networks help veterans stay grounded during periods of change. Connecting with people who understand military culture and transition challenges can provide encouragement, perspective, and accountability. Whether it comes through fellow veterans, mentors, family members, instructors, counselors, or community organizations, meaningful connection creates stability and reminds veterans they do not have to navigate challenges alone.

Asking for help is not weakness. In many cases, it is one of the strongest decisions a person can make. Reaching out for guidance, academic support, mental health resources, or career assistance shows self awareness and commitment to growth. Support systems often help veterans identify opportunities, stay motivated, and continue progressing toward their goals even during difficult periods.

Connection also plays an important role in resilience. People who maintain strong social support systems are often better equipped to manage stress, adapt to change, and maintain emotional wellness. Conversations, shared experiences, and mentorship can create a sense of purpose and belonging that strengthens both personal and professional growth.

No one succeeds completely alone. Growth happens more effectively when people have support, encouragement, and a community willing to help them move forward.

Connect with us to learn more about the resources, guidance, and support available to veterans as they continue their next mission.

The red poppy has long served as a symbol of remembrance for those lost in war, tracing back to the battlefields of World War I where poppies grew across the scarred landscape of fallen soldiers. Today, that symbol continues to represent the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of the men and women who gave everything in service to our nation.

Memorial Day is a time for reflection. It is an opportunity to remember the lives behind the uniforms, the families forever changed by loss, and the generations of service members who answered the call knowing the risks involved. Their sacrifice is woven into the freedoms and opportunities we experience every day.

As communities gather this weekend, take time to pause and honor those who never made it home. Visit a memorial, share a story, support a Gold Star family, or simply take a quiet moment of gratitude. Remembering is how we ensure their legacy continues forward.

FAFSA season is here, and Veterans Upward Bound is here to help make the process easier.

Completing the FAFSA can open the door to grants, scholarships, work study opportunities, and additional financial aid that can help reduce out of pocket education costs. Many Veterans and military connected students leave money on the table simply because they are unsure where to start or believe the process is too complicated.

At Veterans Upward Bound, we work one on one with participants to help navigate the financial aid process, understand education benefits, and prepare for the next step in their academic journey. Whether you are returning to school after years away from the classroom or just beginning to explore your options, you do not have to figure it out alone.

Watch our latest video for FAFSA tips, guidance, and reminders to help you stay on track for college funding opportunities.

“How Veterans Upward Bound Has Made It Possible for Me to Pursue a College Education.”

Central Carolina Community College Veterans Upward Bound program has been one of the most rewarding programs that I have ever been a part of. I was first introduced to the program when I attended a Veterans Resource Fair in Sanford, North Carolina. I had no idea of what to expect from this program. However, I decided to join and have an open mind. Transiting back into college was not an easy task for me. I was dealing with my own insecurities, such as being in my early thirties and trying to go back to school to give myself a second chance. The issue that I was most worried about for myself was wondering if I could fit in with my classmates. My goal during that time was to just blend in and be a fly under the radar.
Veterans Upward Bound has provided me a framework to begin believing in myself. I consider myself a loner. The sad reality is that I do not have many close friends. This state of mind has impacted my self-confidence and self-esteem. I would often ask myself, if I was good enough. Veterans Upward Bound has hosted many different events, including academic refreshers in subjects such as Spanish, Math, and English, yoga sessions with Sanford Yoga and Community Center, financial wellness classes, cooking classes, sports attendance events, etc. There were such amazing events that I appreciated the Veterans Bound Upward staff for their tireless efforts in hosting these events for the veteran community.
The most rewarding part of being a member of Veterans Upward Bound is the
opportunity to connect with other veterans. The simple fact that I can tell my story and that I have people to whom I can relate my circumstances is rewarding.
My current goals for myself include improving my health by losing weight, expanding social connections both personal and professional, improving my academic standing in school, and gaining valuable work experience in my major. I will be transferring to Fayetteville State University in the fall of 2026 and starting classes in August. My major will be Business Administration.
