IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT FLEAS AND YOUR PETS

Sandy Oaks Animal Control has recently received an increased number of requests regarding fleas in residential yards. Unfortunately, there is a common misconception that fleas in a yard are caused solely by dogs and cats.

Fleas originate and reproduce in the environment, including grass, soil, shaded areas, and locations frequented by wildlife. While pets can carry fleas, they are not the source of flea infestations in a yard.

Animal Control will not impound or remove a pet simply because it has fleas.

There are several affordable and low-cost flea prevention options available for both dogs and cats. Sandy Oaks Animal Control has information and resources available in our front office and may be able to assist pet owners in locating affordable flea prevention solutions.

To help reduce fleas, mosquitoes, flies, and other parasites, residents should:

• Keep grass and vegetation trimmed and maintained
• Remove standing water from the property
• Pick up pet waste regularly
• Utilize appropriate pest control products or insecticides according to manufacturer directions
• Keep pets on a veterinarian-approved flea prevention program

A runner is a great inexpensive way to keep your dogs contained; however, make sure they are not just tied to a tree/porch/car/etc. If you choose this type of containment, your dog MUST be on a runner with a proper doghouse and water at all times. In the summer your dog must have a way to get out of the elements. Please contain your dogs. All dogs must be spayed and neutered in the City of Sandy Oaks. We have several low-cost resources available. Please contact Animal Control for these resources or come into the city hall at 22870 Priest Road. Remember if your dog goes out to go potty you must go with them and have them on a leash. you cannot let them roam.

Penny paws will be in the sandy oaks park this Saturday. The time has been adjusted, and they will be here from 9am-11am

Sandy Oaks Animal Control would like to remind everyone that roosters are not allowed in the city, and you will be cited per rooster if you have them. You are allowed to have 10 hens for eggs and meat. Sandy Oaks Animal Control would also like to remind you that goats are not allowed per City Ordinance 2025-262.

2 dogs available for adoption or looking for a rescue. please consider fly or roxy for your newest family member.

fly is a 10 month old male border collie mix. he is neutered and UTD on shots, deworming, and flea/HW prevention. he is black and white and loves to play fetch and is just a goofy dog.

roxy is a 9 mo female shepherd mix she is spayed and is UTD on shots, deworming, and flea/HW prevention. she has a stunning blue eye and is black, white and brown. she loves attention and was part of a cruelty case where she was neglected and left in a kennel. she deserves a yard where she can run and play!
