Perkins Township Fire Department

Perkins Township Fire Department Since 1953 Perkins Township has operated a fire department. The Perkins Township Fire department responds to approximately 2,500 calls for assistance annually.

Perkins Township Fire Department delivers fire, emergency medical, and technical rescue services to the 13,000 residents, along with the thousands of visitors who work, shop, and stay in the township. The department initially operated with a staff of trained volunteers, but it has grown as the township has grown. Today the fire department delivers fire, emergency medical, and technical rescue serv

ices with a staff of 24 full-time and 24 part-time employees to the 13,000 residents, and the thousands of visitors that work, shop, play, and stay in the township. The department operates 3 ALS ambulances, 3 engines, 1 ladder, and a brush unit, out of fire stations on Campbell Street and Milan Road. All personnel are cross-trained. Most of the full-time firefighters are paramedics, rescue technicians, several are members of the Erie County Haz/Mat team and 20 are certified fire safety inspectors responsible for inspecting more than 725 commercial and industrial buildings throughout the township.

We would like to introduce Engine 221!
This is a 2026 E-One Typhoon.

This engine is replacing Engine 224, which was purchased in 2002. Perkins operates three engines, with ages of 32, 24, and 18 years old, respectively. The average life expectancy of an engine is 20 years. With mounting maintenance costs, inability to find parts, and reliability concerns, the decision was made to purchase a new truck.

We would like to thank the Trustees for their support of this purchase, and a special thank you to the community for supporting the department levies. The 2.75 mil levy passed in 2021 was put on the ballot for the purpose of updating aging equipment and apparatus, and stabilizing staffing. Without the community’s support this would not be possible.

I would like to personally thank the truck committee. They worked very hard designing a truck to meet our needs and selecting a vendor who could do so within our budget. The purchase was made through a national purchasing cooperative, which in turn reduces the cost.

Engine 221 should serve the community for the next 20-25 years and will be housed at Station 2 on Campbell St.

After a multiyear process, just the other day, Perkins firefighters received the department's new truck — and it looks strikingly different than others in the fleet.

Paying homage to history while honoring the local school system, it does, above all else, better prepare first responders in keeping community members safe. — https://tinyurl.com/ykd4abmd

As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week (March 15 – March 21), Erie County will be participating in the Statewide tornado drill by testing its Outdoor Emergency Sirens on
Wednesday, March 18th at 9:50 a.m..
The county sirens are activated by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office any time there is a TORNADO WARNING issued by the National Weather Service, or the reported sighting of a tornado/funnel cloud by public safety personnel, or the report of property damage or injuries caused by severe storms/tornado/funnel cloud.
Erie County operates 44 outdoor severe weather warning sirens as part of the countywide severe weather warning system. Emergency Management Director, Tim Jonovich, reminds area residents that the sirens are designed to serve as an outdoor warning device and therefore are not designed to necessarily alert someone inside their home, office or school. The sirens simply mean “to seek shelter and tune to your local TV and/or radio for further weather information.”
Director Jonovich recommends the use of NOAA All Hazards/Weather radios as the best indoor warning systems available today. NOAA radios can be purchased at many area department stores and on line.
It is strongly recommended that each family/household and business pre-plan for weather emergencies. During an emergency, residents are asked not to call 9-1-1 or the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center to inquire why the sirens are activated, as dispatchers will be coordinating the response of area agencies.
The sirens are not activated upon expiration of the warning; you will never hear the sirens activated to indicate “all clear.”
Regular monthly testing of the sirens will continue on April 1, 2026 at 12:00 p.m.
Sincerely,Tim Jonovich, Director

Erie County, Ohio will be participating in the Statewide Tornado Drill on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18th at 9:50 a.m.. The Erie County, Ohio Sheriff's Office will activate the outdoor emergency sirens at that time. Please mark your calendars.

After nearly 30 years in the fire service, with 25 full-time, Captain Michael Pflieger will be retiring on December 18th.

Captain Pflieger started part-time with the department in 1996. In December of 2000 he was hired full-time. Captain Pflieger has been a critical member of the department, serving previously as the Training Officer, and currently as the Maintenance Officer. He has been a mentor to many firefighters throughout his career and has been an integral member of the command staff.

Anyone who knows Mike or has worked along side him over the years are invited to stop by Station 2 this Thursday between 10:00 and 2:00 to congratulate him and wish him well.
