The Gafney received a little shout out today from the Domestic Goddess 603 . Thanks so much for sharing the history and your kind words. ❤️📚

Making my way through the heart of Sanbornville, this handsome brick building caught my attention beneath one of those perfectly blue New Hampshire skies. With its tidy white trim and quietly dignified entrance, the Gafney Library looks wonderfully traditional, but the story behind it is anything but ordinary.

The library was created through the will of Judge Charles B. Gafney, a Civil War veteran who directed that $5,000 be placed in trust to establish and maintain a public library for the people of Carroll County. He specified that it should be located wherever his trustees believed it would provide the greatest convenience and benefit. Sanbornville was ultimately chosen, and the library was dedicated during Old Home Day in August 1925 with Governor John C. Winant as the principal speaker. More than 1,000 people signed the guest book that day, which tells you just how significant the opening was to the surrounding communities.

The Gafney was intended to serve the entire county, making it a rather special little lady: it became New Hampshire’s only county library. Because Judge Gafney wanted people throughout Carroll County to benefit, the library later provided book delivery services to the county farm, now Mountain View Community, and eventually to the county jail in Ossipee. Long before “community outreach” became a polished phrase for brochures, this library was already putting books into the hands of people who could not easily reach its shelves.

The original interior reflected the way people used libraries a century ago. Newspaper reading received special attention, with large oak tables and two fireplaces providing the only heat while readers settled in for a Sunday afternoon. Apparently, our ancestors understood the art of sitting still with something longer than a twelve second video. Imagine that level of focus, I say as someone who stopped in the road because a brick building looked pretty.

The Gafney celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2025, and today it continues serving Wakefield and Brookfield as a private nonprofit library. It offers far more than books, including children’s and teen programs, community events, museum passes, computers, genealogy and local history resources, technology services and even high school equivalency testing.

That is what I appreciate about places like this. The building may preserve the appearance of an earlier time, but the work happening inside continues to change with the needs of the people around it. One man’s final gift became a century of learning, connection and opportunity for generations he would never meet.

Beautiful, useful and still taking care of her community after more than 100 years. Now that is aging with purpose and she wears the brick exceptionally well. ❤️

Today the Gafney Library joins millions around the world in remembering Dolly Parton.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library enabled children all across the world to obtain books for free. She fostered a love of reading which will last generations.

Thank you, Dolly for your acts of pure kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to literacy. They will never be forgotten.

May you rest in peace ❤️📚
