Coast Guard members assigned to Coast Guard Station Los Angeles-Long Beach, underway offshore Rancho Palos Verde, California, August 12, 2026. The boatcrew conducted a patrol along the Sothern California coast in support of the Coast Guard-led Operation Board Trident which is an interagency effort launched in March 2025 to detect, monitor and interdict illicit maritime activity, including illegal migration and activity with transnational criminal organizations.

Adrift 88 miles off Channel Islands Harbor, out of fuel, food and water for two days — that's the call that came in Friday afternoon. The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach watch diverted cutters USCGC Sockeye (WPB 87337) and USCGC Halibut (WPB 87340), along with crews from Station Los Angeles-Long Beach, Station Channel Islands, and Air Station Barbers Point.

That night, crews located the 30-foot vessel and safely brought all 37 people, suspected aliens, aboard. It's a case that shows two of our core missions in the same night: saving lives at sea and securing the maritime approaches to our border. Sockeye's crew transported everyone safely to Coast Guard Base Los Angeles-Long Beach, where our U.S. Border Patrol partners met them and emergency medical services were provided to those who needed care for things such as dehydration.

"I could not be prouder of the crews on scene," said Master Chief Peter Nelson, Sockeye's officer in charge. "They persevered until every person in danger was rescued."
