Today we continued working on the garden bed where we took out the tomatoes. We also found worms and harvested some broccoli. How much fun did YOU have on your lunch hour?
At San Mateo Park Elementary we grow: citizens, character, beauty, strong academics, community & wellness through our garden program!

San Mateo Park School is a TK-5th grade school in the heart of the San Mateo Park neighborhood. San Mateo Park is a neighborhood that was created by John McClaren (the same man who designed Golden Gate Park), and the area reflects that love of nature Mr. McClaren infused into so many of his projects.
Our school reflects that love; we have many trees on campus, and a large field space one doesn’t see at schools much these days. Seeing this beauty all around, a small group of committed parents decided we needed one more piece of beauty that could be educational as well as beautiful. A place that could be calming and teaching at the same time. This group of parents decided the time was right to plan a school garden.
With the assistance of our principal and the incredible hard work of one parent, in particular, our original plan for a school garden has morphed into something we couldn’t have ever imagined! Park School has an incredibly beautiful space that blends in with the school and the neighborhood as well. While we as a school recognize and embrace this beauty, we are also reinforcing lessons learned in the classroom out in the garden. Lessons in science and math, but art and literature as well. Children need dirt and outdoor time; our school garden provides both.
