Today, surrounded by his family, friends and more than 50 current and retired SMC members, we gathered to lay to rest Retired Fire Battalion Chief Chris Cilia, who passed away on Tuesday, February 17, at the age of 69.
Battalion Chief Chris Cilia dedicated 29 years of service to the communities he proudly protected. He began his career with the San Bruno Fire Department in 1982 and later joined the San Mateo Fire Department in 1984. He was promoted to Captain in 1994 and to Training Battalion Chief in April 2008. Battalion Chief Cilia retired in 2011.
Beyond his accomplishments on the job, Chief Cilia was a mentor who was deeply committed to training the next generation of firefighters. For those who served beside him, the fire service was more than a profession—it was a family. Chief Cilia carried forward the traditions of the fire service, sharing his extensive technical and practical knowledge with everyone he trained.
Chris also served beyond his community, assisting with disaster relief for a month following Hurricane Katrina and responding during the San Bruno Fire. He took great pride in the badge and in the commitment to protect others.
Chief Cilia is survived by his wife, Tu-Anh; his sons, Jare, Kyle, and Corey; and a large extended family including his parents, siblings, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He was a dedicated husband, father, brother, and son.
As members of the fire service family, we extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones.
