San Mateo Nippon Gakuyen サンマテオ日本学園 San Mateo Nippon Gakuyen teaches Japanese language and culture to students K-12. Curriculum include The school is attended by over 150 students in 16 classes.

San Mateo Nippon Gakuyen is a 501c non-profit organization. This is made possible through the cooperation of the Board of Directors which oversees and guides our school, the contributions and volunteer work of the PTA which prepares and assists with school events, our dedicated faculty who love teaching, and the support of the many businesses and the community around us. te an enjoyable learning experience for the students, in addition to teaching the Japanese language, a variety of Japanese cultural activities is incorporated into the curriculum. HISTORY

San Mateo Nippon Gakuyen was officially founded as a school corporation in 1919. During the war, the school had to be closed. In 1949, the school reopened, but by 1951 the facility had become old and dangerous. It was condemned by the city, so the school began renting the Buddhist Temple classrooms. In 1960, the incorporated organization was dissolved as a stock corporation and became a non-profit corporation. On November 7, 2009, the school held its 90th anniversary celebration ceremony.

On Saturday Nov 2, 2019, San Mateo Nippon Gakuyen, celebrated it’s 100th anniversary. It was founded in 1919 by immigrants who wanted their kids to learn Japanese language and culture. While it shut down briefly during WW II due to the forced relocation to the infamous internment camps, the school reopened after the war. Today, it has become one of the largest Japanese school in the Bay Area with over 170 diverse students from many background and cultures.

For the celebration, the school received Japan’s Foreign Minister’s Commendation

, recognition by U.S. Congress House of Representatives, and congratulatory message from many organizations including San Mateo's sister city of Toyonaka
