"It's the very process of looking at something that makes it beautiful." โ€” David Hockney (1937-2026) ๐Ÿค

As we reflect on the life and legacy of David Hockney, we are reminded of his enduring invitation to slow down, look closely, and discover new ways of seeing. From Yorkshire landscapes to intimate portraits, Hockney expanded the possibilities of contemporary art while remaining rooted in the simple act of observation.

The Huntington is honored to care for works by Hockney in its collections, including "Tree on Woldgate, 6 March," along with drawings, prints, and photographs that reflect his fascination with landscape, perception, and the joy of looking.

How can music and the arts stand up to forces of totalitarianism? ๐ŸŽตโœŠ

Most people know songwriter and activist Woody Guthrie as the creator of the iconic anthem, "This Land Is Your Land." But Guthrie also believed that music could be a powerful tool for social change.

After moving from Oklahoma to Los Angeles in 1937, Guthrie played this guitar throughout Southern California. On its back, he scratched the phrase, "This machine kills fascists," the first of several instruments to bear the now-famous inscription. For Guthrie, the slogan expressed a conviction that art could challenge oppression and defend democracy.

See this remarkable artifact alongside rare documents and historic objects that explore visions of America across centuries in "This Land Is...," opening June 14.

Through tapestry, Diedrick Brackens unravels and reweaves narratives of Black masculinity. Take a closer look at 'In the valley" and "The flame goes" with curator Lauren ๐Ÿงถ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ

Brackens' tapestries are on view in the Scott Galleries as part of "By-and-By: Telling Stories Through Silhouettes," a gallery featuring historical silhouettes alongside profiles by contemporary Black artists such as Kara Walker, Mustafa Ali Clayton, and Charles White.
