"Those funds are necessary, he said, to expand capacity in the district, which has grown from about 12,800 students in the 2000-’01 academic year to an estimated enrollment of 20,990 this school year.
'The developer fees are one way for school districts to obtain funding at the local level, to help mitigate the residential growth that happens,' Schiel said. 'When these students come in, increasing our enrollment, we need new facilities to accommodate the students coming in.”

The Building Industry Association of San Diego County sued San Marcos Unified School District this month, arguing that increased developer fees amount to illegal taxes that will raise the cost of new homes in the area.

“Affordability of housing is your true crisis,” said Walton [Randy Walton for San Marcos City Council], who argued that development should be designed to make San Marcos a destination city, rather than a bedroom community.

“San Marcos should be a city not that you drive through, but San Marcos should be a city people want to drive to,” he said.

San Marcos city candidates introduced themselves to voters at a forum hosted by the local chamber of commerce Thursday, offering views on growth, housing and the city's business climate.

REFERENDUM HIT GOAL OF 5,000 SIGNATURES!!!!!

Petitions have been handed over to the city. And we are pleased to announce that we hit our goal of 5,000 signatures!!!
Which puts us in a very comfortable position as the requirement is 4,224 signatures to represent 10% of the voters. Once the city and county assess the names (they have 30 days) they will report back to let us know if we met the requirements. If requirements are met it will come back to our city council for a vote. They will decide either to repeal their original vote or put it on the November ballot as a proposition for the residents to vote on.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who rallied, volunteered, and signed. This is a big move in the right direction for our city. But our work is not finished, we need to be sure the proposition passes, and we need to work hard over the next months to be sure we get responsible people in office who will represent the residents of San Marcos and the infrastructure needs rather than scratching the backs of developers.

Three cheers for responsible growth!
