Texas State has a long history since the beginning of Alpha Chi National Honor Society, when Texas State was present at a 1922 meeting of five universities for the purpose of foundin

g a scholarship society for “Class A” students. The organization spread and eventually became a national organization. Dean Alfred Nolle of Southwest Texas State was the president and later secretary-treasurer for 40 years. A prominent scholarship is named in his honor. The official song of Alpha Chi was written by Southwest Texas State student J. Brandstetter in 1935. Alpha Chi's name is derived from the initial letters of the Greek words ALETHEIA, meaning TRUTH, and XAPAKTHP, meaning CHARACTER. In 1935 AX adopted its official shield and key, colors and song. The colors are emerald green and sapphire blue, signifying victory and truth. Alpha Chi emphasizes scholarship, academic excellence and literacy. Alpha Chi awards $60,000 a year in scholarships and is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. Motto: You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. ~ John 8:32

Members of the Texas Iota Chapter of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society traveled to Prairie Lea ISD to spend an afternoon reading with kindergarten and first graders using books that were donated from 'Reading is Fundamental' (RIF). Prairie Lea is a school district with few resources, but takes on kids from miles away who live in the surrounding farmland areas and small towns. After school that day, every child got to take a book home.
