Reminder: Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event TOMORROW!

Tomorrow is the perfect opportunity to safely dispose of old paint, cleaning products, motor oil, batteries, electronics or other household hazardous waste that should never be placed in your curbside bins.

What is SB 54?

SB 54 or the Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packing Producer Responsibility Act was signed into law in 2022 in an attempt to shift the environmental responsibility of packaging onto producers rather than consumers.

Here's a little rundown of what this law is going to require:

The law requires that by 2032 we:

📉Cut single-use plastics by 25%

♻️Recycle 65% of single-use plastics

🌎Ensure 100% of single-use packaging and plastic food ware is RECYCLABLE or COMPOSTABLE

This year's fall compost giveaway is scheduled for Saturday, September 5th from 9 AM to 2 PM 🌱 Bring your pick-up trucks, trailers and buckets to get free, organic certified compost from Kompogas SLO!

All of the compost from this facility used to be YOUR food scraps and yard waste! By using your green bin for organic waste instead of tossing it in the trash, you provide facilities like Kompogas with the valuable materials needed to create healthy compost.

Please note that this giveaway is just for residents, and not for commercial business. Help us be respectful! If you bring a pick-up or trailer, make sure to bring a tarp to cover your load so we don't leave compost all over the roadways. For more details, check out Kompogas SLO on Facebook. ⏰When? Saturday, August 29, 2026 from 11AM - 3PM
📍Where? Cuesta College - SLO Campus, in Parking Lot 3, enter on Hollister Road!

🌸Wondering what cartons you can recycle? We're here to help.

Let's break it down:

As of this year cartons are now able to be recycled in SLO county. So let's go over how to properly dispose.

Accepted cartons include:
- Milk and Juice Cartons
- Tetra-Pak Cartons
- Juice Boxes

Before throwing them in the blue bin remember to rinse, dry, and remove caps or straws!

THRIFT SPOTLIGHT!

Let's highlight reuse and upcycle projects!

Here's 's Nicole who picked up a broken espresso machine that just needed a little love. She cleaned it up, sourced a replacement part, and now has upcycled a high-end, fully functioning espresso machine valued at $1,200!

This is a great example of what a little upcycling can do!

♻️Ever wonder where your recycling actually goes?

Here's the breakdown:

➡️You throw recycling into the blue bin.

➡️Recyclables are collected curbside by your waste hauler.

➡️The recycling goes to our MRF (Materials Recovery Facility).

➡️At the MRF the recycling gets sorted by type, then compacted and packaged into bales.

➡️Bales of recyclables are sold and transported to recycling processing facilities.

➡️Recycling is processed and made into items such as plastic bottles, milk jugs, paper, fiberglass, and even steel products!
