CASA of San Luis Obispo County Please visit our website at www.slocasa.org for more information

CASA trains community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused, abandoned and neglected children in San Luis Obispo County. Each volunteer spends over 30 hours in training and is sworn in by a judge to report on the status of the child they are assigned. These children are frequently uprooted from schools and homes; a CASA volunteer is often the only stable adult in their lives.

We’d like to thank for organizing the awesome Color Run/CASA Charity 5K on campus last month which raised over $300 to support CASA’s mission for local kids in foster care. We appreciate all the participants who showed up on a Saturday afternoon to help bring stability and advocacy to our county’s children who need it most. 🌈❤️

The goal of foster care is for children to be reunified with their families in a safe and supportive environment where they can heal, grow, and thrive.
This National Reunification Month, we recognize and celebrate the families, advocates, and communities working toward reunification and long-term stability.

Last month, Senator Tom Umberg sponsored Senate Resolution 162, recognizing CASA Appreciation Day. This celebrates the 7,500+ volunteers across California who are advocating for and supporting children in the foster care and juvenile justice systems.
Senator Umberg understands the transformative power and impact of the CASA model.

There are currently 90+ children and youth in SLO County without the support and advocacy of a CASA volunteer. We invite you to join us in closing that gap and creating brighter outcomes for youth.

SLO CASA had such a great time at the Expo at the Expo event again this year! Thanks for organizing this awesome evening. We loved meeting so many local businesses and people, and appreciated all the interest at our table to find out ways how our community can support CASA’s mission to serve more local children and youth in foster care. 🍿🎥🙋🏽‍♂️🙋🏻‍♀️

At just 15 years old, Marshall entered foster care after the loss of his mother. Through five different foster homes, one constant remained: his CASA volunteer, Jeff.

Now 18 and a first-year computer science major at Cal Poly, Marshall says his CASA was someone he could truly rely on.
“My CASA worker was mostly in the loop when it came to my grades, my personal problems — I felt more comfortable discussing that with them than more temporary people.”

From navigating the court system and helping him move into the college dorms, to simple moments like kayaking or grabbing lunch, Marshall’s CASA provided stability, guidance, and encouragement during one of the hardest times in his life.

Every child deserves someone who shows up consistently. 💙

🚨 CASA in the news 🗞️:
For youth in foster care, CASA is often the one constant — a trusted mentor, advocate, and supportive adult during some of life’s hardest moments. But now, CASA of San Luis Obispo County is facing a devastating 25% funding cut next fiscal year (July 1) that threatens programs and services for local children and youth.
These cuts could mean fewer staff, fewer volunteers supported, and ultimately fewer children receiving the advocacy and stability they deserve. At a time when the number of youth entering foster care is rising, the need for CASA has never been greater.
Stories like Marshall’s (featured in the article) remind us what’s at stake. With the support of his CASA advocate, he graduated high school, enrolled at Cal Poly, and built a future filled with possibility. Every child deserves that same chance.
We need our community now more than ever. Advocate. Volunteer. Donate. Help ensure CASA can continue showing up for children who need someone in their corner. 💙

‼️We need your help! California CASA’s $20 million per year in state funding has been cut to zero. Without reinstatement in the 2026–2027 budget, CASA programs across the state face serious strain — including here in SLO County.

Please contact Assemblymember Dawn Addis and urge support for $20M in California CASA funding in this year’s budget. A short call or email truly makes a difference.

Right now in our community:
• 200+ children in foster care served this year
• 174+ CASA volunteers are advocating for local youth
• 35 children are still waiting for a CASA advocate
Research shows youth in foster care without a CASA are more likely to experience homelessness, incarceration, and lower graduation rates. CASA changes those outcomes by providing children in foster care with a consistent, caring adult advocate.

Take action today so children in our community don’t lose their only stable, consistent adult advocate.
