County of San Luis Obispo Government County of San Luis Obispo - Official government page San Luis Obispo County as a region is, in recent history, growing.

The County of San Luis Obispo is a general law form of government, meaning it is governed by a variety of statutes enacted by the California State Legislature providing common functional and organizational guidelines for county governments. The County of SLO provides a spectrum of local government services, including: law enforcement, criminal justice, fire protection, health service, public assis

tance, road construction and maintenance, water and sewage systems operation, land use planning, agriculture, library services, and recreational opportunities. The County not only provides "umbrella" service and protection for the 125,000 residents who live in the incorporated cities, it provides direct and local government service to some 100,000 residents who live in the unincorporated areas, such as Baywood/Los Osos, Cayucos, Cambria, Nipomo, Oceano, Templeton, and San Miguel. Population reached 33,000 in 1940 and grew to 51,417 in 1950; 81,044 in 1950 and 105,690 in 1970. In 1980, the census reports show the population to be 166,435, showing Atascadero, Baywood/Los Osos, Nipomo, Arroyo Grande and Grover City as the significant growth areas. The County government focuses tremendous effort upon balancing the resource requirements of its ever-growing population with the need and desire to maintain the county’s attractive and hospitable environment.

Our County of San Luis Obispo Public Works says traffic delays are expected during repairs to Santa Rita Road.

Construction activities and traffic delays are scheduled on weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., from June 15 through June 26, 2026.

This work is part of the County’s ongoing storm recovery program. Severe storms in early 2023 and 2024 caused significant road damage, including partial lane loss, necessitating these repairs.

Motorists are advised to adjust their travel plans accordingly and allow extra time for traffic delays. Please contact Kyle Whelan at [email protected] or (805) 781-5211 with any questions or comments.

Community members in had a lot to celebrate today, as the held its 30th Anniversary and Summer Kick Off Event!

County Supervisors honored National Peace Officers Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day, first established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy to recognize the dedication of law enforcement officers and to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

We are grateful for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office and all our local law enforcement partners — from city police departments to campus police and the CHP — who work together every day to keep our communities safe. Their roles go far beyond enforcement; they protect, educate, support those in crisis, and face risks many never see.

Today and every day, we pay tribute to the officers who lost their lives serving others, and we recognize the commitment and professionalism of those who continue to serve San Luis Obispo County.

Thank you for your service and sacrifice.
