The men and women of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) are dedicated to the fire protection and stewardship of over 31 million acres of California's privately-owned wildlands. In addition, the Department provides varied emergency services in 36 of the State's 58 counties via contracts with local governments.

A call for service with a little more “tweet” than usual.

Last week, CAL FIRE/Butte County City of Oroville firefighters were called to help an exotic pet bird that had been stuck in a tree for several days. With some encouragement from the owner and a few strategic squirts of water, firefighters were able to safely bring the bird down and reunite him with his very relieved owner.

A little teamwork, a little patience, and one happy bird. 🐦

☀️ The forecast is heating up.

Temperatures are already high and expected to climb.

Stay safe in the heat:
➡️ Drink plenty of water and hydrate before heading outside.
➡️ Take regular breaks in a cool or shaded area.
➡️ Check on children, older adults, and anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. If someone is showing signs of heat illness, take it seriously and act quickly.

Arson can put lives, homes, communities and our natural resources at risk. If you see suspicious activity or have information about a suspected arson, say something.

🎒What does a wildland firefighter carry into the field?

A lot more than you might think.

Web gear (a modular system of belts, straps, and attached pouches designed to help carry heavy equipment comfortably) gives wildland firefighters a way to carry the essentials while working away from the engine or other resources.

What goes into web gear can vary depending on the assignment, conditions, and length of time spent in the field. A fire shelter, water, spare gloves, a multitool or pocketknife, and even a clean shirt are just some of the items you might find in a wildland firefighter’s gear.

Wildland firefighters can spend up to 24 hours at a time on the fireline, so having what they need close at hand is important. The gear they carry helps them stay prepared, equipped, and ready for the work ahead.

📍 September 10, 2026 – Emigrant Gap Demonstration State Forest
➡️ Explore the beautiful Six-Mile Valley Meadow from 10:00am to 11:30am and learn about ongoing restoration efforts. Discover why aspen and meadow habitats are essential for native wildlife, forest resilience, and natural fuel breaks.

Owl Discovery Night
📍 September 12, 2026 – Jackson Demonstration State Forest
➡️ It’s going to be a hoot! From 7:00pm to 9:30pm, take a guided nighttime walk at the Camp One Day Use Area to look and listen for the owls that call Jackson Demonstration State Forest home. No RSVP needed; just bring a headlamp or flashlight, sturdy shoes, water, and your curiosity.
