The Public Works Department provides public services related to the safe and efficient movement of traffic on the 1349 miles of County maintained roadways; engineering and surveying review of proposed land development; administration and operation of various water and waste water wholesale and retail facilities, including the Nacimiento Water Supply and Los Osos Waste Water projects; long term master water planning; franchise administration for the unincorporated areas; facility planning, design and construction management of all County building projects; maintenance and custodial services for all County occupied facilities.

Expect Delays for Microsurface Paving on Several San Luis Obispo County-Maintained Roads.

Motorists should expect some delays this fall while the County of San Luis Obispo Public Works Department performs roadway resurfacing on approximately 50 miles of county maintained roadway. Crews will have one-way traffic control and flagging in place at various work locations while the microsurface paving takes place. Work is expected to begin early October and conclude in December, weather permitting.

Residents will be notified 72 hours prior to the work via door hangers in both English and Spanish.

On the day that microsurfacing paving takes place, there will be no parking on that street and temporary “No Parking” signs will give advanced warning of paving. Driveway access will be restricted for a few hours until the product cures and will be limited to emergency needs only.

Motorists should expect delays for microsurface paving at various roads in San Luis Obispo County in the following communities:

• San Miguel
• Templeton
• Santa Margarita
• Cambria
• Nipomo

The County of San Luis Obispo maintains approximately 1,100 miles of paved roads. Microsurface paving is a cost-effective treatment that provides a new wearing surface for roadways, helping to keep roads in good condition.

Nipomo – Motorists may experience traffic delays of up to 30 minutes as the County of San Luis Obispo Department of Public Works repairs areas of Suey Creek Rd damaged in the 2023 and 2024 storms. Nipomo – Motorists may experience traffic delays of up to 30 minutes as the County of San Luis Obispo Department of Public Works repairs areas of Suey Creek Rd damaged in the 2023 and 2024 storms. During this work, heavy trucks will be hauling material along the route and there will be crane operations near the project sites, located approximately 1.6 miles north of the HWY 166 intersection.

Construction activities and traffic delays are scheduled on weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., from September 14th through October 30th, 2026.

This work is part of the County’s ongoing storm recovery program and another way that Public Works is preparing for anticipated storms during the upcoming El Niño storm season.

Construction of the Bob Jones Pathway Gap Closure Project (Segment 1)

San Luis Obispo – On Tuesday September 1, 2026, construction work begins on Segment 1 of the Bob Jones Pathway Project, located between the Octagon Barn and Cloverridge Lane.

The project will include construction of a multi-use pathway to improve access and safety for bicycle and pedestrian users between the two locations. A future segment will extend this portion to the existing Bob Jones Trail Ontario Road trail head, providing contiguous access between the City of San Luis Obispo and Avila Beach.

The contractor installed construction signs on Higuera Street between the Octagon Barn and Cloverridge Lane on Monday August 31, 2026. Motorists are encouraged to obey construction signs or use alternative routes or modes of transportation where possible. The County will update the public on future construction activity or if traffic delays are expected.

Souza Construction out of San Luis Obispo has been awarded the $10.5 million construction contract to perform the work. The project is funded through a federal Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant provided by the California Transportation Commission. It is anticipated that the project will take up to 18 months to be constructed.

Creston Road Bridge to Open One Week Ahead of Schedule

The new Creston Road Bridge at Quail Creek (near South El Pomar Road) will open today, one week sooner than expected, after being closed for construction on June 1. The detour and road closure signage will be removed, and the traffic pattern will return to normal. Motorists should be advised to drive with caution as the contractor may continue to work on the shoulders of the road to finalize the project.

The bridge, which had reached the end of its service life, experienced significant structural damage during the winter 2023 storms.

Temporary repairs were completed at that time to re-open the road to the public, but the most recent work involved replacing the existing 85-year-old storm-damaged timber and concrete bridge with the new concrete bridge.

🚗South Bay Boulevard Bridge Construction Update – School Traffic

With local schools starting this week, we want to provide an update for families and other drivers traveling on South Bay Boulevard between Los Osos and Morro Bay.

Construction is continuing on the South Bay Boulevard Bridge Replacement Project, and motorists may occasionally encounter traffic control and delays near the project.

👷‍♂️No construction-related delays are permitted before 9:00 a.m. or after 3:00 p.m., helping keep the roadway moving during peak school drop-off and pick-up times.
👷‍♂️County staff are monitoring construction activities and traffic impacts at the project site.

Construction schedules can change as work progresses. When significant traffic impacts are anticipated (up to 20-minutes), the County will provide advance notice through roadside message boards and its online road information page: https://ow.ly/y9VT50ZC7ae

Templeton – Motorists on Santa Rita Road may experience traffic delays of up to 30 minutes as the County of San Luis Obispo Department of Public Works performs road repairs. The delays are necessary to allow large equipment and heavy trucks to haul material along the route located approximately 3.5 miles west of Vineyard Road.

Construction activities and traffic delays are scheduled on weekdays between
7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., from August 24 through September 26, 2026.

This work is part of the County’s ongoing storm recovery program. Severe storms in early 2023 and 2024 caused significant road damage, including partial lane loss, necessitating these repairs.

San Luis Obispo and Avila – Motorists may experience traffic delays of up to 30 minutes as the Public Works Department performs road repairs on Prefumo Canyon Road from August 4 through November 4, 2026. During this work, heavy trucks will haul material along the route necessitating the traffic delays near the project sites, located approximately 3.5 miles west of Los Osos Valley Road.

Construction activities and traffic delays are scheduled on weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., from August 4 through November 4, 2026.
