Never forget.
This past week has given me several moments to reflect on what it truly means to serve others.
From recognizing members of our local law enforcement community at the Masonic Lodge’s annual Law Enforcement Awards Dinner, to standing at the September 11 Memorial at San Luis Obispo Fire Station 1, I have been thinking about the men and women who make the choice to run toward danger when the rest of us are trying to find our way to safety.
Twenty-five years ago today, first responders entered the World Trade Center as thousands were being evacuated. Among those who made the ultimate sacrifice were 343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers.
Behind each of those numbers was a person—a parent, spouse, child, friend, colleague, and someone who answered the call to serve.
Today, I remember them with gratitude and humility. I also think about the first responders here at home who continue to answer that same call every day, often without knowing what will be waiting for them when they arrive.
September 11 reminds me not only of tremendous loss and sacrifice, but also of the way we came together in the days that followed—neighbor helping neighbor, strangers supporting one another, and communities united by our shared humanity.
May we never forget those we lost, those who ran toward the danger, and our responsibility to continue showing up for one another. 🇺🇸
